Yes let's celebrate this experience!

I love this book and I bought it as a gift for my daughter who has been complaining about her physical appearance due to her pregnancy. I'm hoping she will appreciate the beauty of the pregnant woman as captured in these wonderful photos. I only wish Ms. Garbarino had been around when I was having my own children. A photo like one of these would have been a true keepsake.

Gorgeous!

This wonderful collection presents women at a unique moment - the latest month of pregnancy, some of them just days before delivery. Each one wanted to be remembered at her fullest, so had the picture taken. (Probably many pictures, if the photo shoots in my experience mean anything.) More than that, each woman here wanted to be seen. She made her picture public, so the whole world can appreciate her as she was then.

In fact, most of the mothers-to-be made their bare selves very public, choosing outdoor settings for the camera. Some chose quiet parks and distant forest settings, but others chose city streets, the Golden Gate or Brooklyn bridge, a New York subway - the photographer herself chose Times Square when her turn came. Even with pre-dawn privacy, those are hardly private places. Perhaps that just emphasizes that so much of pregnancy is public, not just being seen grand and full, but the fact of it as experience shared between mothers everywhere, of every place and time. Garbarino underlines that universality with models from across the spectrum of color and look - whatever the outer differences, the grace of the human animal comes through the same way.

Still, these photos make clear every mother and pregnancy is unique. Brief notes by most models show how each family, each woman, even each of a woman's children is different, from the trials of difficult conception, through trials of the changing body, to the trials of delivery. And each full body seems different, too: some (like Lori and Angeliki) sleeker, others (like Debbie and Joelle) full to bursting. There's so much more to say, but really, the pictures themselves say it best. This collection is one to enjoy, not just for mothers, their partners, and even their children, but for anyone who truly delights in every part of a woman's life.

This is a stunning coffee table book of pregnant nudes in the most witty and inspiring outdoor environments. Before a pregnant woman contends with the metamorphosis that is motherhood, she will experience a physical transformation that is, in its own way, as mind-boggling. The women in Ripe -- of all sizes and colors (and sexual orientations) -- meld with natural forms (trees, corn husks, sea boulders) or stand in contrast to the grittiest and most iconic urban settings. Each photo is lush and beautifully composed, some locations unbelievably daring (i.e. Times Square, a subway car, and in one heartbreaking shot, a sunny street opening on the World Trade Center) and all affirm the the goddess-like splendor of pregnancy. Several eloquent narratives by the models round out this portrait of a transient high point in our lives as women. A fun and affirmative gift for a mother-to-be.

About the Author

A gifted artist and writer, Natalie Babbitt is the award-winning author of the modern classic Tuck Everlasting, The Eyes of the Amaryllis, Kneeknock Rise and many other brilliantly original books for young people. She began her career in 1966 as the illustrator of The Forty-ninth Magician, a collaboration with her husband. When her husband became a college president and no longer had time to collaborate, Babbitt tried her hand at writing. Her first novel, The Search for Delicious, established her gift for writing magical tales with profound meaning. Kneeknock Rise earned her a Newbery Honor Medal, and in 2002, Tuck Everlasting was adapted into a major motion picture. Natalie Babbitt lives in Providence, Rhode Island, and is a grandmother of three.

The Best book I Have Ever Read

The best boks I have ever read u ask? Thats EASY! Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. Tuck Everlasting is about a 10 year old girl named Winnie Foster who lives in a town called Treegap. One day she stumbles across a "17 year old" guy named Jesse Tuck in the wood her family owns. She fights with him over a spring she comes across and sees him drinking out of. She faints, but when she comes to, she is on the back of Mae Tuck's (Jesse's mom)horse. They take her back to thier cottage and tell her a wonderful story about how they drank from that spring and are now immortal. She stays with the Tucks over night, but a man in a yellow suit had already arranged a deal with her parents: If he can bring Winnie home, they will give him the wood. He tells the Tucks how he is going to market the spring water, and he wants them to help him advertise. Mae gets mad, and in a frantic attempt to save Winnie and the water, she accidentaly kills the man. Jesse gives Winnie a bottle of the water and tells her to wait until she is 17 to drink it so they can get married. I won't give away the ending, but I will tell you that I didn't think it ended the way it was supposed to, and it made me literally cry. I hope it can be as enjoyable for you as it has been for me, and I hope there is a book like it somewhere in the world that I happen to come across.

Actually, I rate this the biggest number ever stars!

Although I haven't read TUCK PARA SIEMPRE, (though I do speak a little Spanish), I read the English version, and anyone who thinks Tuck Everlasting is boring or bad, etc. was dropped on their heads when they were babies! The book was awesome! When my teacher passed it out in the 6th grade, I thought it would be boring, but it turned out to be my absolute favorite! My best friend gave me the book for Christmas a year later, and I've read it several times and cried everytime. Not only was it beautifully written, but I think Jesse and Winnie should have run off together. Sure, living forever wouldn't be peachy, but Jesse would have made it worth her while.
If a writer can pull at a reader's heart strings with their books, that's really something, but when the same author can do it to the same reader with the same book, that's incredible, and that is what Natalie Babbitt has done to me.
Oh yeah, don't forget-on October 11, the new Disney movie of TUCK EVERLASTING is coming to theatres! They made Winnie 15 so that she and Jesse could get REALLY romantic (and they do),and I'm so happy about it. It made me cry just watching the previews, because it looks beautifully done. ...
So, in conclusion, Tuck Everlasting is a story that will stay with me forever, because it has touched my life.

About the Author
Nivaldo Tro is currently chair of the department of chemistry at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he has been a faculty member since 1990.�� He received his B.A degree in chemistry from Westmont College and earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University, for work on developing and using optical techniques to study the adsorption and desorption of molecules to and from surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum. He then went on to the University of California at Berkeley, where he did post-doctoral research on ultra-fast reaction dynamics in solution.� Since coming to Westmont, Professor Tro has been awarded grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, from Research Corporation, and from the National Science Foundation to study the dynamics of various processes occurring in thin adlayer films adsorbed on dielectric surfaces.� Honored as Westmont’s outstanding teacher of the year in 1994, 2001, and 2008, he was also named the college’s outstanding researcher of the year in 1996. Professor Tro lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Ann, and their four children, Michael, Alicia, Kyle, and Kaden. For leisure, he enjoys reading, writing, snowboarding, biking, and other outdoor activities with his family.

The "Essentials" book contains fewer chapters

Beware, there are two versions of Tro's Introductory Book. One version, "Introductory Chemistry" has 19 chapters. The other is a shortened version, "Introductory Chemistry, Essentials" and is missing the last few chapters. The shortened version is cheaper and is published for curriculum that does not cover the organic and biochemistry topics. Both books have a similar cover. The publisher provides the Mastering Chemistry Access code free with books purchased directly from Pearson. Not all books are sold with a Mastering Chemistry Access code. Neither are all books sold with the CD Rom which contains ancillary material.

Exactly what an introductory chemistry textbook should be!

I was very impressed with this book. All of the fundamental concepts of chemistry are explained clearly, and the text is accompanied by numerous illustrations, real-world examples, and applications to make everything as clear as possible to the student. Whenever a new type of chemistry problem is presented, numerous examples are given of how to solve it. Students are guided through one or (usually) more examples before being asked to solve a type of problem on their own, and the answers to all odd-numbered exercises are in the back of the book.

I got this book to study on my own to prepare for a return to school to enter a science program. Though I had no teacher to guide me, I still found it very clear and easy to understand, and was able to do most of the end-of-chapter problems with no great difficulty, thanks to the clarity of presentation in the text. I did have a slight background in chemistry, which was helpful, though I was more than a decade removed from my single semester of high school chemisty. I give this book the lion's share of the credit for the fact that I was able to score 87% on the University of Minnesota's chemistry placement test.

If I could do well with this book with no teacher, I'm confident that anyone at all can do great in a chemistry class based on this book with a teacher to help. It takes plenty of effort too, that goes without saying. Chemistry is no simple topic. But for introducing a complex topic in a clear, informative, and interesting way, I don't see how this book could be improved upon. I'm excited to pursue a science degree and further my knowledge of chemistry, and this book was a huge help in getting me on my way. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

P.S. Apparently a CD is available for this book. Mine didn't come with one though I bought it from the university bookstore. Not having it was not a problem, though; the text is clear enough. Don't worry if you can't find the CD.

Good introductory book

This book is extremely well written and easy for students to read and understand. The illustrations are also excellent and help students link the microscopic to the macroscopic. The book also very clearly lays out methods for quantitative problem solving. Many well written sections and problems are related to real world applications (deep sea diving, airplane cabin pressurization, rust, soap micelles, skin cancer from sunlight calculations, cancer treatments.) If you are looking for a complicated, indecipherable, dry but comprehensive tome, then this is not the book for you. If you are interested in getting started in your study of chemistry with a book that is actually relevant and readable, then this is a great book! My students consistently give it rave reviews as well. I haven't met Prof. Tro, but if I ever do, then I will thank him for writing this book.

Not for beginners

I have been programming for over 10 years, but my Windows specific C++ programming is relatively weak due to inexperience with it. Note that if you are in the same boat, you will need additional resources (web based, help files, other books) on top of this book as this book assumes you are already proficient in creating Windows apps.
They make no attempt to tell you otherwise, it is an expert level book - but even if you already know C++ well, there is much Windows specific details that this assumes you know.

Great book and very useful, just not entry level, so know that going in.

This is da book

If you want to do any serious development in Window, this is the book to get. Once you read and understand the basic C++ books, and want to get beyond simple applications, you need this book. This is not a beginner text, but a grown-up book on what is happening inside windows and how to use it in your application. I found this book invaluable in building multithreading, port i/o, virtual array management in my application. The author really knows his stuff and presents it in a very readable fashion. The source code for the examples in this book are well-commented and I have found it easy to take code fragments from then to use in my applications.

This book is a keeper.

Had all of the info I was looking for...

As you guessed by the title, this book covered exactly what I was looking for. C/C++ programmers who are dealing with Windows kernel objects, shared memory objects, events, semaphores, security and the like will appreciate this.

The book covered and clarified information that may/may-not be available on MSDN (I never saw it there while searching...), and did so with an overall approach that ties the topics together, shows how they are used, and generally is more understandable. I appreciated this book much more than jumping around through a bunch of disjointed MSDN pages trying to understand how these elements work. The book gives you deep understanding and more than a few tricks you can use in the debugger.

Beginning developers, or developers working on managed code prob. wouldn't have much use for this book. Consider this the nitty-gritty reference manual for how all of the low level stuff gets done.

I appreciate this book, it won't end up back at the used bookstore.

"Gone With The Wind" meet some serious Southern Cultural History

Wyatt-Brown wrote the "benchmark" study on Antebellum Southern cultural life and mores worthy of classical historians like Kenneth Stampp or David Potter and William Davis. Wyatt-Brown brings to life the very "white" and Anglo-Saxon British heritage fashioned American style from waves of immigrants, the contours of Southern geography, class and caste formation, slavery, and the conscious values of "Southernness" always evolving from rural to urban, civil and post war, and 'Reconstruction' that left the 'South' and its peoples from east Texas to Northern Virginia more culturally unified even as always regionally diverse, racially divided, and a defiant 'colony' until WWII in all ways from the rest of the non Southern America.

For social and political and economic historians of this period, Wyatt-Brown's work will be consulted but not surpassed at least for another generation. The scholarship is sound and the fluency he has on this subject will delight all serious readers interested in Americana at large, and the "South" specifically.

Another great at-home guitar course with Steve Krenz

This is a review of "Learn & Master Fingerstyle Guitar" with Steve Krenz.

This DVD-based training program is produced by the same folks (Legacy Learning) who publish the popular "Learn & Master Guitar" course. Both courses feature Steve Krenz. He is a very effective guitar teacher; he obviously has many years of experience teaching students of all ages, interests, and abilities. See the Legacy Learn & Master Guitar website for more details about their various courses.

With guitar lessons from a guitar teacher costing between 40 and 120 dollars per hour, this course is quite a bargain. Many years ago, I once spent a year with a guitar teacher going through Mel Bay Guitar Melody Chord Playing System. That year of instruction cost 1,500 dollars (not adjusting for inflation). While I felt the cost was worth it, I am very happy that much cheaper DVD courses are now available as an alternative.

"Fingerstyle" is a technique of playing the guitar by plucking the strings directly with the fingertips, fingernails, or picks attached to the fingers, as opposed to "flatpicking" which involves plucking the guitar strings with a single pick. When playing "fingerstyle," the thumb typically maintains a rhythm (usually playing alternating bass notes on the lower three strings) while the remaining fingers pick out the remaining chord notes (or a melody) on the higher strings.

"Learn & Master Fingerstyle Guitar" with Steve Krenz would probably be best for someone who is new to "fingerstyle" guitar. Even if you are not a beginner, you might benefit from this course; completing the lessons (including the "advanced workshops") could potentially fill in gaps in your prior education and experience. Also, if you are a guitar teacher, going through this course might give you ideas that could improve your instruction of this material. Actually, I am a little disappointed that they did not add three more lessons (DVDs) to this course to raise the level of instruction (and playing) just a little.

This is a thoroughly professional product: the training is well designed, the video and audio are outstanding. You don't need to know how to read sheet music to use this course.

This course is not for the absolute beginning guitarist; I suggest that you first finish any one of the following before starting this course:
(1) Six to twelve months of lessons with a guitar teacher
(2) At least lessons 1 through 10 of Gibson's Learn & Master Guitar
(3) Fender Presents Getting Started on Electric Guitar - DVD or Fender Presents Getting Started on Acoustic Guitar - DVD
(4) The Rock House Method: Learn Rock Guitar - Beginner Program

This course will work best if you can already play open chords and barre chords, with no hesitation between chord changes. Having said that, lots of folks have learned chords and fingerstyle simultaneously: it's challenging, maybe even aggravating, but it can be done.

The "Fingerstyle Guitar" course includes the following:
- 9 instructional DVDs
- 1 CD with a PDF file of the course booklet and MP3 files of the "jam-along" tracks
- Fingerstyle arrangements of over 20 songs
- Beginner and advanced workshops for each session
- "Lessons with the Masters" featuring Phil Keaggy, Thom Bresh, and Pierre Bensusan

The course does not come with a pre-printed course booklet. Instead, the 137 page course book is included as a PDF file on the included CD. You can either print out the whole booklet at once, or you can just print out the page(s) you are working on. The course also comes with "jam-along" tracks as MP3 files on the included CD. "Jam-along" tracks allow you to play the guitar parts over pre-recorded bass and drum tracks. I play such tracks through my guitar amp via an iPod. (I used an acoustic-electric guitar while going through this course.)

Here is an overview of the content:

Lesson 1: Fingerstyle technique; fingerstyle technique exercises; nails; fingerstyle guitar tips; fingerstyle resources - guitars.
Lesson 2: Adding notes; alternating bass notes; syncopation; metronomes.
Lesson 3: Intervals (3rds, 6ths, 10ths); working with intervals; strings.
Lesson 4: Arranging for fingerstyle; finding melody notes; "Danny Boy"; finding your own melody; footstools.
Lesson 5: Classical technique; Giuliani studies; hybrid classical picking; study in A minor; "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"; nylon strings.
Lesson 6: Slides; hammer-ons; pull-offs; creating open position runs; hammer on tricks; harmonics.
Lesson 7: Jazz chord families; adding color tones; adding a bass line; repeating diminished chords; fingerstyle resources - The Real Book.
Lesson 8: Pop fingerstyle; Merle Travis technique; advanced fingerstyle technique; pull-offs to open strings; capos.
Lesson 9: Lessons with the Masters - Phil Keaggy, Thom Bresh, Pierre Bensusan.

Lessons 1 through 8 are all followed by a "Beginning Workshop" and an "Advanced Workshop," which also include many song arrangements. The lessons are roughly 40 to 45 minutes in duration. Each workshop is roughly 30 minutes long. As with all DVD courses like this, it is great to be able to replay portions of the lessons and workshops as many times as necessary to master the material.

In summary, this is another excellent at-home guitar training program from Steve Krenz. It is ideal for the beginning guitarist who has at least learned basic chords. Intermediate and advanced players may also benefit from the course; but there may be some who feel that the course is too basic for them (i.e., they might end up disappointed that they spent their money on the course). I am glad I went through this course: it helped me to correct some bad habits, it taught me new theory and techniques, and it is helping me to regain some long-neglected skills. The "workshop" exercises from this course will now become part of my daily guitar workout.

For intermediate players who want to learn from a master, check out DVD-Jorma Kaukonen's Fingerpicking Guitar Method. For you young folks out there (who don't know what you missed), Jorma Kaukonen was the lead guitarist for the Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna. While he is known to many as a rock guitarist, Jorma loves fingerpicking, and he is a great instructor.

Excellent Fingerstyle course.

Exellent addition to the basic Learn and Master course by Steve Krenz. He expands on the fingerstyle technique presented in the basic course. If you have already reached Lesson 10 (fingerstyle), you can start this course simultaneously to learn even more. Steve is an excellent teacher. His lessons also include finger strengthening exercises. He also plays other guitars (besides Gibson) in each lesson, picked to enhance the sound/style he is teaching. Very pleased with this purchase.

A comprehensive guide to a multitude of fingerpicking guitar styles.

This series really got me raring to go on playing fingerstyle guitar. There is so many different techniques available to use, and Steve Krenz is probably the best modern instructor of guitar out there. He has no pretense, and is super friendly in the videos so it makes for an enjoyable watch, like having a supportive, knowledgable teacher. I don't think I'd recommend it for brand new guitarists, but if your guitar chops are limited, you can still do very well with this series. It was through this series that I developed a deep love for classical style after that section in the videos, and here after a year or so I'm playing Bach and Beethoven when I used to play Dylan and Hendrix

Decent, But Not Very Engaging

Despite the terrible cover (even by academic press standards), this looked right up my alley for a number of reasons: (1) a good friend just moved to Baltimore and I've been trying to read more about the city, (2) I know mainstream Baltimore pretty well and was interested in learning about a part of the city I've never ventured into, (3) I've been a big fan of The Wire since season one, and wanted to see how closely reality coincided with that drama, and (4) I've been on a bit of a "academic as participant/observer" reading binge lately, including books like Brothel, Rolling Nowhere, and Gang Leader for a Day, and wanted to compliment those with a inside look at policework.

Like those three books, this one was born from academic roots, as Moskos was scouting around for a project for his PhD dissertation. After approaching and being rejected by several city police forces, the Baltimore PD accepted his proposal to work as a cop for a year with the knowledge he would write about his experience. So, the good news is that his account of policing starts from day one at the academy and proceeds unbroken for twenty months, which is a marked contrast to some of the books mentioned above, in which the authors dip in and out of the culture/life they are exploring. The bad news is that everyone Moskos served with knew he was writing a book. The problem of observation influencing behavior is well-established in documentary film and ethnography, and Moskos seems to underplay it's effects a bit too much.

Some more good news is that Moskos is meticulous is outlining both the psychology and procedure of being a patrol officer. As a city employee myself, it didn't surprise me (though it did depress me), the extent to which urban policework is hindered by bureaucracy and administrative fiat. The overreliance on patrolling from cars, the strict adherence to the policy of immediate response to any call for service (311 or 911 call), the avalanche of paperwork generated by any officer activity, all of these contribute to a environment that lends itself to officers "gaming the system" for their own comfort and/or financial benefit. While I love this kind of insider procedural detail and the explanations of the mentality it engenders, the book suffers from being a good deal too dry.

To a certain extent, this reflects the reality of most policework, which is boring and laden with paperwork. However, the books I mentioned are all engaging precisely because their authors do a great job of making characters out of themselves an the subjects of their study, and that just doesn't happen here. Moskos never lets us get to know his fellow officers or much of himself, and without that personal connection, it ends up reading like a long social policy paper (or a revised dissertation, which it i). The ultimate policy conclusion of the book is not a shocking one, but for those interested in the "war on drugs" it's certainly worth reading, as it is capably outlined and grounded in Moskos' personal fieldwork. Basically, Moskos argues that the war on drugs is a total disaster from a policing perspective, creating a huge drain on resources that could be more effectively directed at other social problems. He believes that the country has yet to learn the lesson easily drawn from the history of alcohol prohibition (which he goes into in rather digressive length and detail), which is that making things illicit merely removes it from government control (and taxation), without reducing demand.

While I'm personally more or less on board with this conclusion and am heartened to see it supported up by Moskos' day-to-day patrolman experiences, it's not really what I came to read about. The book will tell you very little at all about Baltimore (perhaps because Moskos is not from there), and beyond spelling out some of street-level mechanics of the drug trade, there's not much here about East Baltimore you couldn't have gleaned from The Wire and/or The Corner. To a certain extent, one has to feel a little bad for Moskos, since that show kind of steals his thunder. Which bring up another point, his service was about seven years ago, and one has to wonder to what extent things have changed since then, if 9/11 has had an impact on policing, or the increased use of computers, for example.

In any event, while it's certainly readable (aside from numerous typos), it never really engages, and that's why I ultimately found it somewhat disappointing. I would highly highly recommend it to anyone thinking about becoming a city cop, and it' also probably worth reading if you're into criminology, ethnography, and drug policy -- otherwise it's probably of limited interest.

Decent Effort, But Missing a Few Beats

Moskos' book recounts his 14 months on the beat and his training as a Baltimore city police officer. The book is an abridged version of his doctoral dissertation. Turning a dissertation into popular reading is difficult and the book falls down in a number of places. A long history of Prohibition suddenly turns up at the end and is only partially well woven into the text. There are other drifts into facts and figures, as well, and the effect tends to be more didactic than illuminating. For example, there is a needless listing of arrest statistics for Moskos and his colleagues, where a sentence or two about the range of arrest records would have sufficed. Like many ethnographies, some of the most interesting details are in the footnotes (actually, endnotes here), often told more concisely and succinctly written than much of the main text. There also are longitudinal survey data that don't get discussed at all until the endnotes and would seem to have materially affected Moskos' relationship with other officers. He tends to minimize the impact of writing a book on his relationships and observations, beyond his introduction to the force and one wonders how well he actually monitored all of that. In addition, very routine, often difficult aspects of policing such as domestic violence (mentioned in passing) and dealing with the mentally ill (no mention at all) get little coverage here.

Despite the detail, the book really fails to get at a certain level of depth in terms of the relationships among cops and the motivations to join and remain on the force. Indeed, some interesting information on racial and gender differences in motivation to join the force turn up in the endnotes and apparently will be part of another publication. Moskos pulls punches a bit with regard to the conduct of his fellow officers. His father (noted military sociologist Charles Moskos) has been criticized for taking many aspects of the military's "color blindness" and meritocracy at face value. Moskos seems to do the same early on in his book with respect to the presence of corruption and other misconduct, yet the endnotes indicate that 10% of his class left the police because of their conduct, a remarkable percentage in a field where it is difficult to fire people with a certain level of tenure. Later on in the book, Moskos does talk about people who seem to have limited motivation or other problems in the job and intimates at excessive uses of force. Because this kind of material is not well developed, it becomes difficult to see the context where misconduct or poor performance occur and the motivations of the people involved. The web of relationships among the officers and the sense of Moskos' colleagues as people could have been better developed with more attention to case studies. He may have wished to protect identities, and avoided this, although other information, like arrest records would seem to offer thin protection of confidentiality. Compared with classic, intimate ethnographic portraits like "Street Corner Society" or "The Urban Villagers", the book falls short, particularly in relation to Whyte's appreciation of everyday language or Gans' ability to go back and forth between jargon and everyday life.

Moskos lays out a number of policy proposals, but they seem a bit naive, particularly in terms of how they would be introduced, implemented and monitored. The orientation of law enforcement and the culture that reinforces it are well developed in the book, but their impediments to change are not well considered. Similarly, comparisons with the Netherlands fail to take into account differences in culture, social structure, etc. that would affect adaptation to the US.

If readers are concerned that I'm a little harsher than earlier reviewers, a few considerations are in order: I'm not his brother; I've done qualitative research; I have known police officers, personally, at a number of points in my life; and previously had some involvement in the evaluation of prospective police cadets. Like Moskos, I also took time off from my studies and worked in a sometimes dangerous field where I occasionally had contact with police---in my case working in psychiatric hospitals, which gave me an irreplaceable education. The psychiatric field has no end of ethnographic and journalistic accounts of varying quality, as well as fiction based on fact like "One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest". I ca appreciate academic aspects of the book, as well as its popular appeal and the bridges between the two. Moskos' book will inform those who haven't had much to do with police, but are curious. Unfortunately, this will require some plowing through tedious detail, and some people may not make it all the way through. On the other hand, a reading of a good journalistic account of police work such as David Simon's "Homicide" (also taking place in Baltimore), might be more enjoyable.
