I went into this book having already spent a bit of time working with C#. It worked well as a transition into C++, although there were a few situations where he did something basic (such as using \n for new lines) without explaining what he did. Not a big deal when you can google anything you don't quite get. Some of the hints and tips are also a little ahead of themselves (with many pointing to a future chapter) or just repetitions of what was said a few paragraphs ago. There are also complex words that some people may not understand. I recommend this book to the masses who wants to learn about C++.

About the Author

Matteo Pescarin

Matteo Pescarin started his career as a filmsetter. He cofounded a digital agency in 1998 with Emanuele Tozzato and became an expert in Flash in 2001, giving talks and writing guides on it. He later decided to distance himself from closed source technologies and committed himself to open standards and open source, joining the Gentoo Channel Italia, an Italian-wide Linux User Group dedicated to the famous distro. He became passionate about HTML and XML-related semantic technologies, combining, once again, his passion for 2D graphics with programming. Matteo moved to London, UK, in 2009 after getting a CS degree. While still working on LAMP technologies, he started learning and specializing on the project management and quality assurance side of work, where his major interests still lie. A good tutorial

This is a good introduction to testing a Yii2 project. A lot is covered in 199 pages (including index), but if you if you follow the sample through, tutorial-style from front to back, you should have a pretty good foundation for incorporating testing with Codeception into your Yii2 development projects.

Although this book starts from the beginning with testing by discussing premise, motivation and concepts, it does expect the reader to have a "knowledge of Yii's core concepts" coming in...as well as some other web concepts in general. For example, chapter 6 covers functional tests using a RESTful API service. I found this chapter extremely challenging -- partly because I did not use the standard Yii project template as a starting point and had to modify some settings along the way, and partly because I am a REST novice -- but I finally did get all the tests to work.

There are a few editing errors (typos?) that are typical of a first edition, and at times the writing style was difficult for me to follow. So I took a star away. But I am very happy to see this subject handled as a separate volume, and absolutely recommend this book for Yii2 developers who want to get up to speed on testing.

About the Author
Mark Beck began his massage career in 1974 after completing a massage apprenticeship under the guidance of Bob Rogers. He completed a program to become a holistic practitioner in 1979 and has taken hundreds of hours of continuing education classes. Mark owned and directed two massage schools and remains active in state and national professional massage organizations. Most recently he was an inaugural board member of the Alliance for Massage Therapy Educators (2010-2014). He holds a bachelor's degree in vocational education with an emphasis in massage therapy from the University of Idaho. Mark developed the Structural Muscular Balancing Seminars and is coauthor of the Structural Muscular Balancing Manual. Because of a spinal cord injury in 1990, Mark retired from the practice of massage therapy but continues to be an advocate for excellence in massage education.

This workbook is written to accompany Beck's Theory and Practice of Therapeutic Massage. However, there are places where the definitions to the vocabulary are missing in the book, where questions or labeling are answered in a future chapter, and where the questions are worded so differently from the book it takes outside research to answer them. Most workbook chapters have at least one of these mistakes and many have several of them making the workbook not only difficult, but confusing. Our teachers have even had a hard time helping us find answers in the book. At times, even the answers that they have from the teacher's guide are clearly wrong or at best confusing. I understand that workbooks are meant to make you think and really get a grasp on the material, but I believe that this should be accomplished without leaving the student confused.

A profound, pragmatic, strikingly original philosophic work. Everyone should read and understand this book.

First let me share how I first came into contact with this excellent, fascinating book...

In the mid-aughts a Finnish programmer/scientist/philosopher named Ari Heljakka collaborated with me on the Novamente Cognition Engine, the predecessor to the OpenCog AGI system I’m now working on. Along with discussions on the specifics of our AI work, we often dug deep into philosophical issues. Ari had a unique and powerful view of humanity and the path to transhumanity, and we kept in touch after he left the Novamente project to found a software company, Dreambroker.

Ari had a lot of insights about a lot of things, but what struck me most was his steadfast dedication to the task of perfecting his own mind — of transforming himself from a human being driven by human emotions and instincts, to a fully rational goal-achieving machine. One thing we frequently discussed was the aesthetics of goal-system sculpture — how to shape one’s goal-set in a way that effectively lends itself to being an effective goal-achieving system.

At some point in there, Ari wrote a book on his philosophical views, “Model Zero.” I read it in PDF form years ago; but I just noticed recently that the book had made its way to Amazon.com ….

Have you ever considered transforming yourself from an ordinary human mind into a supremely rational, self-reflective, logically and conceptually coherent goal-achieving system? Do you consider this idea at least interesting and worth musing about, or understanding better? If so, this is a book for you. Combining the philosophic and the pragmatic, Heljakka carefully explores what the human mind is, and what the human and transhuman mind could and should be.

“Model Zero” is elegant, pithy and at times cryptic; but always well thought out and worthy of careful reading and reflection. It’s not leisure reading, and it’s not supposed to be; but there are no prerequisites beyond an ability to deal with abstractions and a willingness to think hard.

I have to admit, I don’t feel personally inspired to follow the prescription for life that is implied by Ari’s book. In recent years my thinking has been drifting in different directions. I’ve been impressed by Weaver and Viktoras’ notion of “open-ended intelligence”, which takes self-organization and autopoiesis and evolutionary growth as primary, and views goals and the quest thereof as particular patterns that emerge in this open-ended growth and organization process. This view doesn’t necessarily contradict Ari’s view, but it certainly places the emphasis differently. On a personal level, it seems there is a big difference between

1) shaping oneself into an optimal goal-achieving system, with a well-sculpted goal-set

2) entraining oneself, as an open system, with the open-ended intelligence of one’s environment … acknowledging that this is likely to lead in unexpected, unpredictable directions

Of course, one can formulate the latter as a goal, and then say that achieving powerful open-ended intelligence is just one goal that one may work toward. But the question is whether this is really a valuable perspective to take on the dynamics of an open-ended mind. I’m sure it’s a perspective with SOME value, but I’m not currently sure how much. Other, complementary views also merit exploration.

But Ari has formulated the “mind as a rational goal-achieving system” more clearly than anyone else I’ve known or read, and he makes all sorts of other interesting points along the way…. If only there were more deep thinkers like this in the world; if only there were more books recording such deep, original, intriguing thoughts…

Good enough

As of 2009 there are not many alternatives to learn the powerful programming language Erlang and the OTP (Open Telecom Platform). This is THE book written by the designer and implementor of Erlang, Joe Armstrong and he seems to know what he is talking about. High quality humour may not be one of Armstrong's strengths but when it comes to finding attractive examples he shines using his favorite language and platform.

This may not be the perfect book, it has its problems such as promising that some things will be pointed out but the chapter ends without fulfilling it. A few minor frustrations aside the book provides a very good overview of the most important points of Erlang with enough breadth and depth. The chapter where Armstrong talks about a simple then adding transaction semantics, fault tolerance, hot code swapping, etc. is a kind of tour de force. Another good application is a Shoutcast server implementation in just a few lines of code. It would be very good to compare this example to Peter Seibel's Practical Common Lisp [1].

If you want to learn more about this kind of programming, I'd definitely suggest reading 'Concepts, Techniques, and Models of Computer Programming' [2] which shows the Oz programming language and the Mozart platform and teaches the fundamentals of message-passing concurrency and network-transparent distributed programming.

Finally it must be repeated that Erlang has a very high-quality VM along with mature libraries for concurrency and reliability. If you want to experience industrial-strength distributed and / or multicore applications that scales well then it would be only wise to follow the advice of Joe Armstrong.

Warning: If you are not exposed to Lisp, Prolog, Haskell, Oz, etc. beforehand be careful for a different kind of syntax and semantics. You'll have unlearn a few concepts to understand the power of new concepts.

Good, But Not Great

There aren't a lot of Erlang books out there, so if you want to learn Erlang, you need this book.

However, I found the writing style a bit preachy. The organization of the book needs work, as the author is constantly referring to topics he hasn't covered yet. I also found that the index needs a lot of work, as it's missing quite a few topics that I know are in the book. The API reference also is missing some functions, which I thought was odd.

This book does a good job in promoting Erlang's ability to do concurrency well. I was hoping to get more functional programming style and mind set from the book, though.

All in all a good book to have if you want Erlang, but you'll need more if you want to really dive into functional programming or if you want a complete Erlang reference.

Functional introduction

To most of us, functional programming is either an academic pursuit, or a fun university pastime. However, with the trends towards multi-core and distributed computing, this paradigm is making a comeback, resulting in a lot of dignified "I told you so" arguments, which completely miss the point. It is not about one style versus the other, but rather about adapting the best of both worlds.

Erlang is pure functional language, and Joe Armstrong does great job of introducing the reader to the concepts, underlying libraries, and provides several non-trivial examples: IRC-like service, SHOUTcast server, and a full text-indexing search engine. You don't need to have any prior knowledge of the language or functional programming as a whole, the writing reads very easily, and you'll be up and running in no time.

I can't say that I'm writing Erlang programs all of the sudden, but I can say with confidence that I've picked up some very important architectural principles and an appreciation for the messaging-passing architecture. Great book, and highly recommended for any programmer.

About the Author

Kathrin K�ster studied Economics, Chinese and Japanese studies at the Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen-Nuremberg / Germany, where she obtained her doctorate with distinction. Her dissertation focused on organizational development, namely privatizations in Japan.

In the 90s she held various international positions at the Japanese multinational Sony Corporation. In the early 2000s she was involved in the development of the Swedish-Japanese Joint Venture SonyEricsson.
