Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 9 Up–Zusak has created a work that deserves the attention of sophisticated teen and adult readers. Death himself narrates the World War II-era story of Liesel Meminger from the time she is taken, at age nine, to live in Molching, Germany, with a foster family in a working-class neighborhood of tough kids, acid-tongued mothers, and loving fathers who earn their living by the work of their hands. The child arrives having just stolen her first book–although she has not yet learned how to read–and her foster father uses it, The Gravediggers Handbook, to lull her to sleep when shes roused by regular nightmares about her younger brothers death. Across the ensuing years of the late 1930s and into the 1940s, Liesel collects more stolen books as well as a peculiar set of friends: the boy Rudy, the Jewish refugee Max, the mayors reclusive wife (who has a whole library from which she allows Liesel to steal), and especially her foster parents. Zusak not only creates a mesmerizing and original story but also writes with poetic syntax, causing readers to deliberate over phrases and lines, even as the action impels them forward. Death is not a sentimental storyteller, but he does attend to an array of satisfying details, giving Liesels story all the nuances of chance, folly, and fulfilled expectation that it deserves. An extraordinary narrative.–Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley Public Library, CA

From Bookmarks Magazine
Zusak, author of I Am the Messenger, took a risk with his second book by making Death an omniscient narrator—and it largely paid off. Originally published in Australia and marketed for ages 12 and up, The Book Thief will appeal both to sophisticated teens and adults with its engaging characters and heartbreaking story. The Philadelphia Inquirer compared the book's power to that of a graphic novel, with its "bold blocks of action." If Zusak's postmodern insertions (Death's commentary, for example) didn't please everyone, the only serious criticism came from Janet Maslin, who faulted the book's "Vonnegut whimsy" and Lemony Snicket-like manipulation. Yet even she admitted that The Book Thief "will be widely read and admired because it tells a story in which books become treasures." And, as we all know, "there's no arguing with a sentiment like that."

From Booklist
Gr. 10-12. Death is the narrator of this lengthy, powerful story of a town in Nazi Germany. He is a kindly, caring Death, overwhelmed by the souls he has to collect from people in the gas chambers, from soldiers on the battlefields, and from civilians killed in bombings. Death focuses on a young orphan, Liesl; her loving foster parents; the Jewish fugitive they are hiding; and a wild but gentle teen neighbor, Rudy, who defies the Hitler Youth and convinces Liesl to steal for fun. After Liesl learns to read, she steals books from everywhere. When she reads a book in the bomb shelter, even a Nazi woman is enthralled. Then the book thief writes her own story. There's too much commentary at the outset, and too much switching from past to present time, but as in Zusak's enthralling I Am the Messenger (2004), the astonishing characters, drawn without sentimentality, will grab readers. More than the overt message about the power of words, it's Liesl's confrontation with horrifying cruelty and her discovery of kindness in unexpected places that tell the heartbreaking truth. Great Cause of Book Thieves Globally.
By John McLaughlin
I am, of course, premature in writing this review, since I am only about 100 pages into my first reading of the paperback text. But already there is no question in my mind that the book deserves all the accolades it has already received since its first publication some years ago. My only excuse -- if it is that -- is that I just came to the book very recently (and, I'd like to say for the record, atone initiated a book discussion forum by the title of "The Book Thieves" [ahem..] before going to the Amazon entry for *The Book Thief* and finding out I'd been beaten to the punch a considerable time ago, oh well.) Among other things -- but i'm sure this has already also been noted ahead of me) -- there is a sardonic Death in charge throughout Ingmar Bregman's game-changing movie, "The Seventh Seal," one helluvah way to be introduced to Chaucer's "Knights' Tale" as a wet-behind-the-ears, just-off-the-boat Harvard junior English major, Fall of 1960. Brrrr.

The writing here is superb, the pace is spell-binding, and the cliff-hanging suspense at the ends of chapters is, well, suspenseful -- sorry -- and I know I'm far behind the rest of you. I *think* we're going to abandon our own free-standing discussion forum, and I'll send a note to that effect to my co-conspirator in that baby beginning. Thank you, Amazon, for putting all these resources at the tip of one's computer. "Oh Death was never enemy of ours/ We laughed with him, we leagued with him, old chum... .Knowing that better men would come, and greater wars,/
When each proud fighter brags he wars on Death for Life. / Not men, for flags." (Wilfred Owen).

The Book Thief Mainly Just Stole My Reading Time
By Joan H. Mather
Just finished reviewing this and suddenly my review disappeared! Briefly, this is a book that was not as good as the movie. I was influenced too, by the fact that I had just finished Anthony Doerr's "All The Light we Cannot See" a true classic covering the same historical period of WW2.
I had also not realized that it was written for "Young Readers" which may have accounted for its writing style. a style that I found simplistic and un subtle. There were lovely parts to be sure, but all in all I found the format of using Death as a narrator, irritating and at times trite.

Loved it!
By Kristine
I made a deal with myself to try and read a few of the books on my TBR pile each month on top of my other book commitments. The Book Thief has been on the top of that pile for quite a while. I know, I know! Try not to judge...I'm quite embarrassed that it has taken this long for me to tackle it. I honestly don't have any excuses. I love historical fiction and more importantly books surrounding World War I and World War II. My Mother, Sister and Daughter have all read it as well as numerous of my friends. It was time for me to read it.

I knew I was in trouble after just a few pages. Not only did the story take place in WWII Germany but it was narrated by death. It did not have the makings of a happily ever after. First off, I wasn't sure how an entire book (particularly one that is 576 pages long) could be narrated by death without being completely depressing. I have to say though, that it worked beautifully. Of course there was a lot of depressing content, it was WWII after all, but at the same time there was a lot of beauty within the pages. Not only was the narration of the story unique but so was the writing and together it made for one of the best books that I have read in quite some time. The descriptors in this book were so vivid that I felt like I could reach out and touch them. It was pure 100% talent at its finest.

I won't go into detail about the plot because this book has been reviewed millions of times. I will say, however, that the synopsis did not do it justice. It was far bigger and greater than how it was described. Some of the best characters were also found within the pages of this book that I adored. Leisel Meminger was an amazing young girl with a love for books. How could I not love her and the people she loved like Max, Rudy and Papa to name just a few.

I won't lie and say that it was all rainbows and unicorns althought there was a lot of colour. There were times when I had a lump in my throat and a few times the tears ran down my face. I really can't properly put into words how moving and enjoyable this book was for me. After reading hundreds (yes hundreds) of books surrounding WWII you would think that they would all start to read the same. This was absolutely not the case. This was a uniquely beautiful story that would be suitable for readers of all ages. There really isn't anything that I can say other than it is a must read. I wish I hadn't waited so long to read it myself.

I loved every heartbreaking page of this book and won't soon forget it.

Gangster Warlords: Drug Dollars, Killing Fields, and the New Politics of Latin America, by Ioan Grillo

In a ranch south of Texas, the man known as The Executioner dumps five hundred body parts in metal barrels. In Brazil's biggest city, a mysterious prisoner orders hit-men to gun down forty-one police officers and prison guards in two days. In southern Mexico, a meth maker is venerated as a saint while enforcing Old Testament justice on his enemies.

A new kind of criminal kingpin has arisen: part CEO, part terrorist, and part rock star, unleashing guerrilla attacks, strong-arming governments, and taking over much of the world's trade in narcotics, guns, and humans. What they do affects you now--from the gas in your car, to the gold in your jewelry, to the tens of thousands of Latin Americans calling for refugee status in the U.S. Gangster Warlords is the first definitive account of the crime wars now wracking Central and South America and the Caribbean, regions largely abandoned by the U.S. after the Cold War. Author of the critically acclaimed El Narco, Ioan Grillo has covered Latin America since 2001 and gained access to every level of the cartel chain of command in what he calls the new battlefields of the Americas. Moving between militia-controlled ghettos and the halls of top policy-makers, Grillo provides a disturbing new understanding of a war that has spiraled out of control--one that people across the political spectrum need to confront now.

Review

"A vitally important book." ―starred review, Library Journal

"A striking exploration of the horrors of mass violence in the Western Hemisphere, with the author offering hope that radical policies could provide positive change." ―Kirkus Reviews

"Grillo dissects Latin America’s narco world, both its mechanics and its culture, with a precision and firsthand knowledge that is astounding. There has quite simply never been a book like this before, one that not only examines the broader currents that allow the drug trade to flourish, but animates that discussion with intimate portraits of both its practitioners and victims. Taut and endlessly revelatory, Gangster Warlords is required reading for anyone who seeks to understand the drug wars taking place in Latin America today--and especially for any Americans who might imagine it’s just 'their' problem." ―Scott Anderson, bestselling author of LAWRENCE IN ARABIA

"Grillo's new book is steely-eyed and sensitive reporting on the criminal kings at the front-lines of the continental catastrophe called the war on drugs." ―Daniel Hernandez, author of DOWN & DELIRIOUS IN MEXICO CITY

"With El Narco, Mr. Grillo gave us an unprecedented glimpse into the vicious world of Mexican drug cartels. In Gangster Warlords, he masterfully expands the criminal landscape to include villains across Latin America and the Caribbean. The depth and detail he provides on fearsome organizations like the Red Commando in Brazil and the Shower Posse in Jamaica cast a much-needed spotlight on groups not regularly featured in US media. A sobering and fascinating look at deadly gangsters in often-neglected corners of our own hemisphere." ―Sylvia Longmire, author of CARTEL and BORDER INSECURITY

"Something new and terrible is happening in the Americas. It has murdered a million people in ten years, and yet we don’t fully understand it. Until now. Combining hair-raising reporting with erudite analysis, Grillo has written an indispensable guide to the new world disorder." ―Richard Grant, author of GOD'S MIDDLE FINGER

"Reading Gangster Warlords is a like riding shotgun through the darkest battlefields of the drug war with a hardboiled narcotics detective at the wheel. You won't want to get out of the car. With terrific storytelling and analytical sweep, Grillo’s guided tour lays bare the interconnected nature of 21st century crime and drug trafficking in the Americas. His warlords are the region's new insurgents, offering no ideology beyond power and riches. The ripples of their violence reach further than we tend to acknowledge. And they aren't going away any time soon." ―Nick Miroff, Latin American correspondent, The Washington Post

"The stories in Gangster Warlords offer a dramatic portrait of a region torn by poverty, dysfunctional politics and the bloody allure of crime. Grillo has written a riveting Latin American tragedy. If only it were fiction." ―Len Krauze, Univision

"Superbly reported, Gangster Walords offers a searching look into crime groups across Latin America and examines how the region got into the violent mess it is in. Ioan Grillo delves deep to deliver grisly detail in sharp focus with the skill of a born raconteur. Just like El Narco, this is a page-turner, despite the tough subject matter." ―Jude Webber, Mexico and Central America correspondent, Financial Times

"Ioan Grillo captures the power and the horror of the Latin American drug cartels with unrivaled reporting and riveting writing. With Gangster Warlords, he once again proves his mastery of interweaving the broader context with vivid, on-the-ground journalism to provide readers with a street level view of a complex war fought without clear front lines." ―Matthew Heineman, director of CARTEL LAND

"Taking his readers for a walk through some of the world's most dangerous streets, Ioan Grillo has produced a crucial travel guide of the murky world of Latin America's criminal fiefdoms. Enriched by narcotics trafficking and other rackets, these mostly non-ideological capos and their armies of young gunmen threaten the region's often shaky governments and institutions, as much or more as the armed insurgencies of decades past. This is shoe leather reporting at its very best: honest, insightful and engrossing." ―Jose de Cordoba, correspondent, The Wall Street Journal

"Grillo’s remarkable new book takes us behind the blood soaked headlines in Mexico and courageously connects the footprints of a beast ravaging the continent, from Central to South America to the Caribbean. The haunting journey is chilling. The reporting first-rate. The lessons sobering, long after you finish Gangster Warlords." ―Alfredo Corchado, author of MIDNIGHT IN MEXICO

“Lays out in clear terms the contours of a world that has existed for years and only grown more barbaric as it's graduated to 'war' status.” ―Bookforum on EL NARCO

Current, diverse examples, and timely to Drug Policy debate (as well as exceptional "true crime")
By Timothy McAllister
Grillo's current book, "Gangster Warlords", is CURRENT. As a person who loves nonfiction as much as good fiction I know that when reading non-fiction knowledge is only as good as it is up-to-date. Reading a book on "current social issues" that references information from the 1970s or before can be entertaining, but not really 'useful'. Grillo is using the most current information possible, partially because he is a part of the sources for the most current information available, and partially because he is just a good journalist who stays up-to-date.
"The War On Drugs" failed, just in case you hadn't noticed. And it failed not because of medical cannabis laws, but rather the incredible amount of money created by the illegal narcotics industry. Fantastic sums of money have been used to purchase weapons and political power to ensure the continuing operation of the illegal narcotics industry, and in doing so societies have been eroded from within. Law enforcement can not be trusted in much of the world since the larger of their paychecks does not come from the government. Beyond that, when the only governmental service provided is law enforcement and the politicians respond to the heads of the illegal trade organizations rather than the populous, people lose all faith in their governments. Many nations in the Western Hemisphere suffer from the lack of trust in law enforcement and one can see it growing in the United States - although for slightly different reasons I believe.
Ioan Grillo lays out fluently what has happened and is happening in four nations/national clusters as examples of the gangster warlords which threaten the global social order. These are: Brazil, Jamaica, Honduras/Guatemala/Salvador, and Mexico. The cross-section chosen provides examples of the differences and similarities of the situations. It is particularly important for American readers to note that what is happening in all of these nations/cluster of nations is directly impacting the USA in regards to immigration policy, social welfare, and other areas in addition to the flood of drugs washing over the USA (unfortunately Grillo does not mention the legal pharmaceutical industry which is making more money by weight off of oxycodone than the cartels do off of cocaine, but I do understand it is outside of the scope of the book).

As Grillo points out, the United Nations will be having a Special Session regarding drug policy in April of 2016.
It is time for a significant shift in governmental policies away from prohibition (which serves to strengthen organized crime) and towards either legalization or decriminalization and treatment (which takes money away from organized crime and utilizes governmental revenue to strengthen society). Change is imperative and "the sooner the better".

One of the Best on What He Does
By J Jimenez
Mr. Grillo is a solid specialist in his field particularly Transnational Organized Crime (TOC) in the Western Hemisphere. "Gangster Warlords" is rich in information about Latin American TOCs. This is not a surprise after reading "El Narco". As an analyst and educator, I highly recommend his work to law enforcement, analysts, scholars, and educators - that is if you dare look at the threat of TOCs in this hemisphere. Other writers on the subject simply regurgitate related events. If you only read the first two chapters of "Gangster Warlord" you will be better informed than most. He is one of my (if not top) go to sources on the related issues. While the United States is traumatized by "Islamic terrorism", it overlooks what is happening south of its border.

This is investigative reporting and analysis at it's very finest. Ioan Grillo does it again
By Joshua Forter
Simply superb. This is investigative reporting and analysis at it's very finest. Ioan Grillo does it again. Frankly...I'm speechless at how incredibly detailed and insightful this book is. As soon as I finished it I started from page 1 and read it again. There's just that much good stuff in it.

Don't Be Deceived: The Definitive Book on Detecting Deception, by Mark McClish

The methods discussed in this book offer numerous opportunities for an interviewer - be it a parent, a spouse, a boss or a law enforcement official - to detect deception. Without the aid of a machine, there are three ways you can determine if someone is lying; by analyzing how a person phrases his statement, by observing a subject's non-verbal gestures, and by examining a person's handwriting traits. Mark McClish brings these three methods together for detecting deception in his book Don't Be Deceived. People's words will betray them. Mr. McClish's Statement Analysis techniques will show you how to examine the language used in a verbal and written statement to determine if the person is being truthful. When a person knowingly tells a lie, it will create a degree of stress which usually surfaces in the form of a body movement. You will learn some of the common non-verbal signs that indicate a person is being deceptive. Don't Be Deceived also discusses several handwriting traits that can show if a person is being dishonest. How letters are formed, how much pressure is used, and how lines of writing are sloped can give us insight into a person's thought process. When individuals are lying, their words, actions, and writing styles can reveal their deception.

All in One Book
By New England Reviewer
This is a wonderfully readable book on detecting deception by Mark McClish, which everyone from investigators, to therapists, to parents o teenagers will fine of value. In short, anyone who hates being deceived will benefit from reading and learning the principles set forth here.

Statement Analysis, Body Language, and Handwriting Analysis:

Mark has put it all together for us, in one book, and doesn't disappoint in all three areas.

Taken from cases around the country's headlines, Mark gives a break down of all the basics to follow in Statement Analysis, but then adds in Body Language 101, and the newer topic (for me), detecting deception through handwriting analysis.

He uses examples from well known cases (OJ, Casey Anthony, Haleigh Cummings) as well as some lesser known, but equally gripping cases, including some transcripts from The Nancy Grace Show.

Readerswill find it not only a fascinating read, but Mark has set it up in a way that is 'textbook friendly' in terms of his chapter breakdowns. As the reader may want analysis of a statement, this book will allow you to look up any part of the statement that you are analyzing. For example, as you read (or listen) to a statement, and wish to focus upon the pronouns, you can go right to Chapter 5 and have samples ready for instruction.

Mark writes to the reader.

Sometimes authors write to their audience, yet maintain one eye upon peer professionals, which can be not only a distraction, but impact the flow of the book. Refreshingly, Mark highlights the simplicity of analysis in sample after sample, which keeps the flow of the book steady for the reader; in fact, so much so that the student of analysis may want to pause, and seek to apply what he or she is learning.

Mark has written a balanced book, dedicating the bulk of the book to words, but adds in the body language features most obvious and easy to assess (for a foundation), and the handwriting analysis section is fascinatingly fresh.

5 Stars for Content, pace, writing style and interest.

Glad It Was Free
By Jack
I was able to read this ebook for free thanks to my Amazon Prime membership, which was great, because there's really nothing in it worth paying for.

A few days before starting 'Don't Be Decieved,' I read the much superior 'Spy the Lie.' If you are looking for a good book on detecting deceit, I highly recommend that over Mr. McClish's book.

Before I dig in too deep here, let me quickly say that Mr. McClish's book is geared towards the analysis of written statements, and in my opinion, it is of only marginal worth. It will be much less useful for those looking for interview techniques and tips on detecting verbal deception.

If my recollection is correct, Mr. McClish spent five years as Deputy US Marshal in the field, before spending the next nine years teaching interview techniques at the academy and reseaching statement analysis, then the last ten years of his government career as the head of a field office where he lectured on statement analysis, before retiring and starting his company. I respect Mr. McClish's service to this country. US Marshal's hunt fugitives, transport federal prisoners, and guard courthouses. I read he was part of a fugitive task force, but I have no way of knowing how much of Mr. McClish's first five years on the street was spent talking face to face with people who have had something to hide, and how much was spent listening to courtroom testimony or driving a transport van. I don't know how much opportunity he had during his last years as a supervisor to get out from behind a desk and interrogate suspects. In short, I question how much of his experience is real world vs. academic and he really doesn't say. Based on what I read, I seriously doubt he has spent much time talking, in person, with liars.

Mr. McClish gave multiple examples of written and verbal statements that after the fact were proven to be false, and then dissected the statements to show where the indicators of deception where. Not too complicated, really, to establish what is already known as fact. It is a bit more complex, however, to take a statement, especially a verbal one made to you during an interview, and tear it down and detect those same indicators of deception.

As I said above, Mr. McClish seems to specialize in written statement analysis. He also tends to hold to absolutes: If a person says this/that/the other, they are always lying. Mr. McClish fails to take into account, or gives scant credit to, regional speech patterns, differences in education and vocabulary, and other things that a skilled interviewer must take into account in trying to determine a person's truthfulness.

For example, Mr. McClish states that if a person attributes an action to an inanimate object, that person is probably lying: "The gun was sitting on the table," instead of, "The gun was on the table." Mr. McClish spent a large part of his career in the South, so I would expect him to know that Southerners tend to use expressions like that quite a lot in everyday conversation. So while that could indicate deception, it won't always mean a person is lying. Mr. McClish might not agree with me on that last bit...in his experience, that probably signals deception. These rules seem very arbitrary and not in keeping with what I know about how people talk.

After being contacted by Mr. McClish, I edited the above paragraph slightly, and I wish to clarify this point. In my opinion, Mr. McClish looks at indicators in terms of the absolute; that is, he views certain words, phrases, and sentence structures as *probable* indicators of deception, as opposed to *possible* indicators. In my opinion, this is a dangerous mindset for an interviewer/investigator to hold. It might seem like I'm splitting hairs, but I believe there is an important distinction between thinking "indicator = liar" and "indicator = maybe liar."

Once again, I was glad this one didn't cost me anything but the time I spent reading it.

Gregg Shorthand
By Happy Shopper
I bought it for nostalgic reasons. I once knew Gregg shorthand and still used some of the phrases (words) in taking notes at meetings and in personal letters or cards (to my sister who also knew shorthand.) It is amazing how much I remembered and keep looking at it to pick up more and more words I should and can be using.

Great refresher!
By 1toomany
I took short hand when I was in high school and don't remember a lot of it. As a personal project I wanted to renew my short hand skills. The book is self-explanatory, and moves fairly quickly. At times, it moves too quickly in teaching symbols for sounds. However, you do go at your own pace which makes it easier.

If you're new to short hand, you might struggle a bit more than if you've had experience with it.
