A 10 foot barge pole is not long enough
By Jimmy Mac
I've been using this book for some outline calcs for an aircraft design. At first it was a good outline on the process with what appeared to be useful text and formulae. As I delved deeper into the text and started actually reading the formulae examining the charts and data I began to realize that there appeared to have been no proof-reading, formulae that make no sense, delta p = Pt1 - Pt1...constant switching between upper and lower case variables within the same paragraph, charts that are labelled incorrectly and the list goes on. I've worked through so many issues within the text that it has now been resigned to the trash. I simply cannot trust anything I read in the book and don't even want the temptation to hope that one section could be correct.
I did a little research on the publisher to see if I could find out if there is a 2nd edition coming out soon with corrections to discover that this is essentially an academic author mill. They self publish academic texts with no editing or peer review.

DO NOT buy this book,

If you know what you're talking about you don't need it and if you don't, this book will not help you. If you like the idea of a puzzle book filled with mystery and twists then maybe buy this...nothing like mental challenges to figure out the truth. There are many texts out there from reputable publishing houses that have less mistakes in them.

Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done, by Larry Bossidy, Ram Charan

The book that shows how to get the job done and deliver results . . . whether you’re running an entire company or in your first management job

Larry Bossidy is one of the world’s most acclaimed CEOs, a man with few peers who has a track record for delivering results. Ram Charan is a legendary advisor to senior executives and boards of directors, a man with unparalleled insight into why some companies are successful and others are not. Together they’ve pooled their knowledge and experience into the one book on how to close the gap between results promised and results delivered that people in business need today.

After a long, stellar career with General Electric, Larry Bossidy transformed AlliedSignal into one of the world’s most admired companies and was named CEO of the year in 1998 by Chief Executive magazine. Accomplishments such as 31 consecutive quarters of earnings-per-share growth of 13 percent or more didn’t just happen; they resulted from the consistent practice of the discipline of execution: understanding how to link together people, strategy, and operations, the three core processes of every business.

Leading these processes is the real job of running a business, not formulating a “vision” and leaving the work of carrying it out to others. Bossidy and Charan show the importance of being deeply and passionately engaged in an organization and why robust dialogues about people, strategy, and operations result in a business based on intellectual honesty and realism.

The leader’s most important job—selecting and appraising people—is one that should never be delegated. As a CEO, Larry Bossidy personally makes the calls to check references for key hires. Why? With the right people in the right jobs, there’s a leadership gene pool that conceives and selects strategies that can be executed. People then work together to create a strategy building block by building block, a strategy in sync with the realities of the marketplace, the economy, and the competition. Once the right people and strategy are in place, they are then linked to an operating process that results in the implementation of specific programs and actions and that assigns accountability. This kind of effective operating process goes way beyond the typical budget exercise that looks into a rearview mirror to set its goals. It puts reality behind the numbers and is where the rubber meets the road.

Putting an execution culture in place is hard, but losing it is easy. In July 2001 Larry Bossidy was asked by the board of directors of Honeywell International (it had merged with AlliedSignal) to return and get the company back on track. He’s been putting the ideas he writes about in Execution to work in real time.

Amazon.com Review
Disciplines like strategy, leadership development, and innovation are the sexier aspects of being at the helm of a successful business; actually getting things done never seems quite as glamorous. But as Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan demonstrate in Execution, the ultimate difference between a company and its competitor is, in fact, the ability to execute.

Execution is "the missing link between aspirations and results," and as such, making it happen is the business leader's most important job. While failure in today's business environment is often attributed to other causes, Bossidy and Charan argue that the biggest obstacle to success is the absence of execution. They point out that without execution, breakthrough thinking on managing change breaks down, and they emphasize the fact that execution is a discipline to learn, not merely the tactical side of business. Supporting this with stories of the "execution difference" being won (EDS) and lost (Xerox and Lucent), the authors describe the building blocks--leaders with the right behaviors, a culture that rewards execution, and a reliable system for having the right people in the right jobs--that need to be in place to manage the three core business processes of people, strategy, and operations. Both Bossidy, CEO of Honeywell International, Inc., and Charan, advisor to corporate executives and author of such books as What the CEO Wants You to Know and Boards That Work, present experience-tested insight into how the smooth linking of these three processes can differentiate one company from the rest. Developing the discipline of execution isn't made out to be simple, nor is this book a quick, easy read. Bossidy and Charan do, however, offer good advice on a neglected topic, making Execution a smart business leader's guide to enacting success rather than permitting demise. --S. Ketchum

From Library Journal
Bossidy, an award-winning executive at General Electric and Allied Signal, came out of retirement to tend to Honeywell (and bring it back to prominence) after it failed to merge with General Electric. Charan has taught at Harvard and Kellogg Business Schools. Collaborating with editor and writer Burck, they present the viewpoint that execution (that is, linking a company's people, strategy, and operations) is what will determine success in today's business world. Bossidy and Charan aver that execution is a discipline integral to strategy, that it is the major job of any business leader hoping not just to be a success but to dominate a market, and that it is a core element of corporate culture. Details of both successful and unsuccessful executions at corporations such as Dell, Johnson & Johnson, and Xerox, to name a few, support not only their how-to method for bringing execution to the forefront but also the need for it. Each author addresses specific topics in paragraphs that begin with either "Larry" or "Ram," and this easy style adds to the appeal of a very readable book. Recommended for academic and public libraries.

like voice, are inconsistent
By Austin J. Walker
After reading this book in one sitting, I am not entirely certain what it brings to the table that an experienced leader would not already know.

The basic premise of the book is that success in business comes down to how people, plans, and operations work together and execution is based on those core processes. In other words, leaders need to know their people, what their people need to do, and how their people do it. In all honesty...this seems incredibly basic.

Though there were some helpful parts of the book, it was poorly written. Even basic issues, like voice, are inconsistent. There were several times throughout the book where it seemed entire chapters repeat, let alone stories (I go to a plant, I meet with the leaders, I talk with the people, and I meet with the leaders again) or concepts like candid conversations. Compared to many other leadership books, it had no statistics beyond anecdotal or personal-experience stories.

This book did not read like it was written from someone who's making assumptions on leadership. There's no doubt it came from a place of experience. However, it was a surface-level treatment of leadership basics that left me frustrated for having spent the time reading the entire book. My guess is that if you are a high-caliber leader, this will be an elementary read. If you are a struggling leader, there are better and more helpful books out there for you.

Leadership - Getting things Done
By Edward J. Barton
Bossidy and Charan dive into the critical gap of getting things done in this management classic. Focused on execution, the authors discuss the critical components for leadership within an execution/get stuff done environment. Pointing out the failures of hands off management, ivory tower thinking and micromanagement, the emphasis is on those critical elements that combine the what needs to be done and who needs to do it to execute on a business strategy or operational plan.

The critical linking of strategy, operations and people is the role of the business leader, and in order to accomplish that critical mission, the leader must be meaningfully involved in those three elements - not micromanaging them, but leading them to efficient execution. The leader's most important job is the selection and appraising of the people in the organization, and this element should consume the bulk of their efforts and should never be delegated. The leader must embrace this role and thrive in it to ensure proper execution of the strategy and operations.

The combination of people and strategy lead to an operating plan, in which the execution takes place. This plan needs to be realistic, ambitious, resourced, specific and accountable. The authors note that this piece is often the art that falls short - where the operating plan is divorced from the strategy and people - and the execution suffers.

The book has critical questions and suggestions for the leader, and provides a platform for thought that is focused on getting things done rather than just the what and who theory of planning. An important read.

This book is a winner and I recommend it.
By Love Badger
My Opinion
There is plenty of actionable material and lots of ideas to share with the officers of your company (a dynamic HR department, developing a company budget in three days). I don't care for the style and format that the book was written in. It jumps from straight forward discussions to side commentaries by Larry & Ram.

The Big Idea
Leadership without the discipline of execution is incomplete and ineffective, plans remain only plans. Organizations of Execution have three things; 1) a strong business Leader, 2) execution must be the core element of an organizations culture, 3) discipline integral to strategy.

Business Leader

Only the leader can set the tone for an organization.

The Leader must be in charge of getting things done by running three core processes; picking other leaders, setting strategic direction and conduction operations.

Seven essential behaviors of a leader:
1. Leaders must `live' their business. They have to know more than just the basics because they have to ask the tough questions.
2. Insist on realism. You keep a realistic view of the company by constantly asking questions.
3. Set clear goals and priorities. Focusing on three or four priorities will produce the best results from the resources at hand, K.I.S.S.
4. Follow through. Failure to follow through is the major cause of poor execution.
5. Reward the doers. You have to make clear that rewards and respect are based on execution.
6. Expand People's Capabilities. Coaching is the single most important part of expanding an organization's capabilities. The most effective way to coach is to observe and provide useful feedback. Feedback is both what is being done right and what needs to be changed.
7. Know Yourself. It takes emotional fortitude to be open to people and information. It takes fortitude to deal with those who are not performing. It comes from self-discovery and self mastery.
a. Authenticity. Be real. What you see is what you get.
b. Self Awareness. Self discipline and self awareness.
c. Humility. Learn how to listen. Admit that you don't know everything. Admit mistakes.

Culture of Execution

An organization's culture is a sum of it's shared values, beliefs, and norms of behaviors.
The inability to act decisively is rooted in the corporate culture. The leaders create this culture and they are the only ones that can change it.
Cultural change gets real when your aim is execution. Most efforts at cultural change fail because they are not linked to improving the business's outcomes.

The foundation of changing behavior is linking rewards to performance and making the linkages transparent. You want differentiation among options, bonuses, and salary increases.

The people process is more important than strategy or operations. A good people process evaluates, develops and plans for succession. It requires integrity, honesty, a common approach, common language, frequency and above all candid dialog.

The People Process:
1. Companies need to plan out near term, medium term, and long term strategies.
a. Hire and train people to meet these strategies.
2. The Leadership Pipeline
a. Having succession depth prevents employees from stagnating and prevents people from moving up too quickly.
b. Talent reviews - Everyone is reviewed against their current job and potential future jobs.
i. Four Basic Competencies to measure are: Functional skills, Business Skills, Management Skills, and Leadership skills.
ii. They will fall in one of three categories: Good Fit, A Stretch, or Action Required.
c. Managers should also do a retention assessment based on compensation, current role, potential role, effectiveness and risk of loss to the company.
3. Non-performers must be addressed; coached, moved or terminated.

Four Elements of a robust People Process
1. A culture of high performance, which makes you demand the best from individuals.
2. A leader who is not only willing but also ready to question a person's assessment.
3. A collegial culture among the top executives of the enterprise, where they hold each other mutually accountable.
4. The Human Resource department that is integrated into the business process.

Discipline Integral to Strategy

At the Heart of Execution; the people process, the strategy process and the operations process.

A strategic plan must be an action plan that business leaders can rely on to reach their business objectives.

The substance of any strategy is the key concepts and actions that define it.

A business unit strategy defines the direction of the unit. Where it is, where it wants to be, and how it will get there.

To be effective a strategy must be constructed by those who are going to execute it.

Decide on your objectives: what do you want to get done? What are critical issues to understand? Why in the end is this helpful?

A Strong Strategic Plan must address the following questions:
1. What is the assessment of the external environment?
2. How well do we understand existing markets or events?
3. What is the best way to grow the business profitability, and what are the obstacles to growth?
4. Who is your competition?
5. Can the business execute the strategy?
6. What are the important milestones for executing the plan?
7. Are the short term needs balanced against the long term payback?
8. What are the critical issues facing the business?
9. What will the business make money on a sustainable basis?

After the Long Term Strategy has been agreed upon, the Operating Plan is created. The Operating Plan breaks down long term output into short term goals. It puts the reality behind the numbers by answering the "hows". Operating Plans are those programs that your company will complete within the year. The leader is primarily responsible for overseeing the seamless transition from strategy to operations.
1. The Operating Plan is a three part process
o Setting Targets
o Developing an action plan
o Get agreement and closure from all participants.
2. Tradeoffs will have to be made between the companies projects; money & A-Players. The out come of the plan must be clear and specific. The plan should be reviewed quarterly to make sure it is still on track.
3. The four flaws of a typical operating plan
o Doesn't provide dialog on the assumptions
o Built around results that upper management wants and doesn't specify actions to make these results reality
o Doesn't provide coaching opportunities for people to learn the totality of the business.
o Plan is very rigid and doesn't allow for new opportunities or forces people to `trick' the system to make goal.

Quotables and Cool Stories

Repeated Failure drains the energy from an organization.

The execution is the process of discussing, questioning, following through and ensuring accountability.

The hands-off leader is not confronting poor performance, searching for problems to solve and then solving them. They are presiding and only doing half the job.

You do not fix a problem by focusing on it's outcome.

If you are really executing and you are listening to tomorrow's customers as well as today's and planning for their needs.

Typically said of a new management initiative; "This too will pass".

Goals don't mean much if no one takes them seriously.

A manager who is emotionally weak will avoid hiring people who are smarter than they are. To them, loyalty is most important.

Failure to deal with underperformers is an extremely common problem, it is usually the result of a managers blockages.

We don't think of ourselves into a new way of acting. We act ourselves in to a new way of thinking.

You get what you measure.

The harmony - sought by many leaders who wish to offend no one - can be the enemy of truth.

Leaders get the employee behavior that they exhibit and they tolerate.

"I want bigger margins than anyone else, and to accomplish this we have to have great people and train them better and faster than anyone else. We need educational programs that are focused on key business issues and problems, the things that matter".

In general the DNA of the people who can execute the model is fundamentally different from the DNA of the people who run a model.

If a strategy does not address the "hows", it is a candidate for failure.

Sometimes leaders strategize themselves into the wrong business.

From the Author
I've been a gamer since 1974 and a professional writer since 1997. The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987 is a culmination of that experience, and I poured my heart and soul into the book, playing and critiquing hundreds of games, researching vintage and modern articles about classic games and legendary game companies and programmers, and doing my very best to write an interesting, informative, fun-to-read book.

Schiffer Publishing, the publisher of The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987, has done a fantastic job all around, from the gorgeous cover design to the awesome layout to the durable binding to the high quality paper to the full color photos and art. Schiffer is a class act all the way, and I'm proud to be an author of one of their books.

The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987 is much different from my "Classic Home Video Games" encyclopedia series in that it includes anecdotes, quotes from other reviewers, quotes from programmers, production histories, and collector pricing, among other features.

this book is excellent. Well-written
By Holt Slack
In a word, this book is excellent. Well-written, beautifully illustrated, and even the squareback hardcover binding makes it a tactile pleasure to hold while you peruse each entry. The author has taken on a very polarizing subject in declaring this book to be the "100 Greatest Console Video Games" from 1977-1987, as every person who grew up gaming in those early formative years of video gaming will undoubtedly have strong opinions about each included game and each personal favorite that was excluded. While it is true that technically this is an opinion-based book, the crisp writing pulls you in to each chapter and through interviews with the games' creators, past reviews, technical data, and interesting personal stories, Mr. Weiss convinces you that each game actually IS a top 100 console game from that era. Games included come from almost every console of the golden age of gaming, including the Atari 2600, 5200, and 7800, Colecovision, Intellivision, Vectrex, Odyssey, and even the first few years of the genre-saving Nintendo Entertainment System.

I would recommend this book to any fan of video games - from the early years of the 70's and the golden era of the 80's all the way to the present day. If you love playing retro video games, gaming history, collecting games, or just reliving your youth through full color photographs and anecdotes, you can not go wrong with this Tome of Gaming Knowledge.

Thumbs Up
By Kieran A Ryan
The enduring nature of video games from this period is explored in a new book by Brett Weiss called “The Best 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987”. It’s clear that classic video games are a passion for Weiss and the knowledge he possesses of the subject shines through in this beautifully produced hard back volume. The book consists of a rundown of the “best” games of this decade as selected by Weiss himself. As you’d expect the usual suspects are there such as Pac Man, Legend of Zelda and Metroid, but there are also some gems that you most likely have never heard of before such as Killer Bees! and Escape from the Mindmaster. All video games consoles are covered (no computer games sorry) including Atari 2600, Odyssey2, Intellivision, Vectrex, ColecoVision, Atari 5200 and NES. The attention to detail is quite remarkable. Each game gets 2-3 pages during which Weiss presents a brief description of the game, some of his own opinions as to the merit of the game and a justification as to why it should be included in the list (if your particular favourite isn’t included, don’t worry it most likely made the 100 “next best” list Weiss includes as an appendix). Rounding out each chapter is a recap of review scores the game received on its release, a list of any reissues and remakes, and in many cases quotes and anecdotes from some of the programmers and people involved in making the game.

Weiss has done a remarkable job in putting all of this together and his love for the games shines through. It’s also clear that he has played each game - there are no fillers here. The graphical presentation is top class and each page has at least a couple of game-associated images. One could be critical of the lack of screenshots for the games; I can only assume related to copyright issues. Instead we get box art, cart art (if there is such a thing) and also my own personal favourite, original print advertisements from the era.

For anyone interested in the collecting aspect of older games, Weiss includes a commentary on the rarity and value of a particular game, when relevant, as well as a rough price guide. It’ll be interesting to the see the impact the digital download era has on classic game collecting in the next few years.

Overall, I can’t recommend this book enough, especially for gamers reared during the emerging years of video games. It would make a really great Christmas gift and who knows, waking up Christmas morning this year you may just be able to justify to your kids exactly why Joust is better than Destiny.

Time Machine Back to the 80s
By MartinRG
At first I flicked down the PDF (sadly I only had an electronic version copy to review) and my first thought was that there weren't enough screenshot and there were far too many words, so I was a bit disappointed.

Then I started reading...... and it all changed. This is just such a spot on book that I actually found my eyes watering with nostalgia.

As a kid growing up in the UK in the 70s (11 by 1980) I was in awe of video games and the arcades (I would love a Gorf machine). I played a lot of games on my friends' 2600s but I got an Intellivision as I liked the controllers and the quirky games (ie not just arcade ports). I spent summers and Christmas at Butlins so fired in a lot of 10ps. I even had a Saturday job in Silica Shop, the UK's number 1 Atari dealer. So I LOVE consoles.

On to the book. The 100 console games noted are pretty much spot on. I have played the vast majority (I bought a 2600 when I was older) and have to say they have picked the right ones. I love the pictures, not just the screen shots but especially the box cover shots, they were so well designed that even now looking at them I get taken back to the 80s. It does make me smile that the games graphics don't come close to what you were promised, but the hardware was just not that advanced then. The book also has other nice pictures such as advertising flyers and photos of the carts themselves - it is amazing the feelings they invoke. I love the fact they aren't just stock photos, some of the box shots still have the price labels on!

The narrative for each game is what sets this book apart. You don't just a run down of the game - you get interviews with the designers, personal thoughts from the author, history of the game (eg when it hit the arcades), a fun fact, just so much detail that I spent a whole weekend reading the book cover to cover without realising - thankfully the weather meant we couldn't go out!

The book is not going to make the kids of today want to play the old games (my son took a look and was very unimpressed) but that is not the point. The book is for the kids whose lives revolved around the latest games, swapping with their friends, clocking up high scores and just wanting to have an arcade in their bedroom. If you are in your late 30s/40s now and liked games then this is a perfect book for you.

I'll save up for the hardback edition, this is a book I'd look at again and again. I'll just have to stop myself bidding on Ebay for some consoles as it has ignited that old flame in me again!

Highly recommended.

worth considering as a part of the Cyberpunk Canon
By J. Higgins
`Metrophage', released in 1988, was one of the 12 `New' Ace Science Fiction Specials published between 1984 and 1990. The cover art is by Earl Keleny.

Unfortunately, the book has long been out of print and copies in good condition fetch steep prices.

Metrophage is a `first generation' cyberpunk novel that, stylistically, belongs with members of the Canon such as 'Count Zero', 'Neuromancer', 'Dr Adder', and 'Islands in the Net'. With its near-future, dystopian Los Angeles setting, 'Metrophage' is best regarded as a direct descendent of Jeter's `Dr Adder', which was written in the early 70s (but not published till 1984).

Metrophage is set in a chaotic, partially destroyed LA, early in the 21st century. The city is divided into small clusters of wealth and affluence, and a larger, impoverished metropolis, peopled by various tribes of techno-enthusiasts, scavengers, self-styled anarchists, and ethnic groups.

The hero is one Jonny Qabbala, a street punk who supports himself by selling drugs and moving contraband for the Smuggler Lords, the de facto rulers of L.A. As the novel opens, Jonny is looking to avenge the death of one of his friends at the hands of Easy Money, another dealer. Impulsive and prone to making bad decisions, Jonny soon runs afoul of Colonel Zamora, the head of the city police force; this is a quasi-facist oganization that periodically sweeps into the city to engage in combat with its less tractable inhabitants.

On the run from Zamora, Jonny becomes entangled in a vast, but secretive, underground conflict being waged between offworld economic blocs, and the militant, far-right organizations formed in the aftermath of the collapse of the US and Europe.

Complicating things is the rise of a disturbing new plague, a plague that in fact may be a bioweapon loosed in a deliberate effort to eliminate the lumpen proletariat from LA.

Self-centered and indifferent to the welfare of the common people, Jonny is not inclined to get involved in efforts to arrest the outbreak. But he may have no choice but to become involved, because Jonny may hold the only hope for a cure for the plague..... if he can live long enough to discover where it came from....

Metrophage is a worthy cyberpunk adventure, less so because of its plot, which is often meandering, and heavily reliant on contrivances to provide it with some degree of momentum. Rather, the appeal of Metrophage is author Kadrey's careful imagery of a near-future LA resembling a cross between `Blade Runner' and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome'. The novel is filled with offbeat, imaginative visual vignettes.

As well, Kadrey's dialogue is well-written and melds nicely with a cast of quirky characters: the smuggler lord Mister Conover, kept alive into advanced age by regular pharmaceutical infusions; Nimble Virtue, the L5 colony expatriate forced to travel LA in an exoskeleton that moves her atrophied limbs; Man Ray, the anarchist weaponsmith; and Groucho, the idealistic leader of the LA anarchists.

Metrophage shares the same faults as `Neuromancer': a prose style that at times is too dense and descriptive; a plot that relies overmuch on nick-of-time escapes to get our hero out of his self-inflicted jams; and final, last-chapter revelations that don't seem to justify all the sub-plots circulating in and out of the main narrative.

But its imaginative drive outweighs these drawbacks, and I would argue that Metrophage rightly stands as one of the best of the first-generation cyberpunk novels.

classic cyberpunk
By M. P. Hills
Reading Metrophage was like re-discovering cyberpunk fiction all over again. He channels noir writers just like Gibson does in Neuromancer, but also drops in some sweet art history and quite respectable tech-extrapolations just like Sterling circa Holy Fire and street pomo theory, a la Zeitgeist.

Not good as Stephenson's Diamond Age or Gibson's Necromancer but still a creative and entertaining cyberpunk read.
By Karissa Eckert
I got a copy of this novel to review through NetGalley. This was a well done and gritty cyberpunk novel. Previously I have read a variety of cyberpunk, mostly books by William Gibson and some of Neal Stephenson's earlier works (Diamond Age and Snow Crash). I didn’t like this book quite as much as those books, but I still thought it was a fun read.

The story is set in future a Los Angeles where everything has pretty much gone to the dogs. Our “hero” (actually more of an anti-hero) is Johnny. He’s hustler that sells drugs to those who need them on the streets. He used to be part of a government organization that loosely enforced the law in Los Angeles, but he gave that up to avoid being burned out by all the stimulants the government feeds their agents.

However Johnny’s past comes back to haunt him when the government hears rumors that Johnny is involved with the Alpha Rats. The whole conspiracy is news to Johnny, but his involvement gets deeper when he one of his friends gets sick with the strange leprosy-like disease that is plaguing the streets. Now Johnny is on a mission to help cure this disease.

This book is full of Kadrey's gritty style, one liners and over the top dialogue. For those who have read and loved his Sandman Slim series, the writing style of this book is similar is a bit less refined.

Johnny is a typical anti-hero. He is mostly out for himself but somehow ends up trying to save humanity through a series of chance encounters and mishaps. He is self-destructive to a fault, but also has a canny ability to survive almost everything. If Johnny has a super power it is survival...and maybe fast talking.

I enjoyed a lot of the side characters as well. They are all quirky and I wish we had gotten to get to know them a bit better. Johnny’s housemates are two woman named Ice and Sumi. Each of them are very intriguing and have their own quirky set of abilities. The strange good guy/bad guy Conovan is another interesting character; he has lived for a very long time due to a life extending drug that is basically rotting his body from the inside out.

The story is a bit of a mish-mash of topics. There is some government conspiracy, potential alien invasion, discussion on drug trafficking, a commentary on the medical community, as well as a dissolute community’s response to plague. The book is fast-paced and honestly a bit crazy at points.

I ended up really enjoying it. It's a very dark story but there are crazy new things around each corner...you just never know what the next page is going to hold. It reminds a bit of Simon Green's The Nightside series from that aspect. You never know what strangely deviant and decadent atrocity you are going to be reading about next.

There is a ton of over-the-top violence here and it is truly a thing of beauty. There's even a whole cult of people in here who practice "violence as beauty". Not necessarily a book for the faint of heart, but if you have read Kadrey's other books you already know that. There are also some very explicit sex scenes between Johnny and the two women he loves.

Overall this was a crazy and fun read. It’s a very dark and gritty tale and at times has a bit of ADD going on. However I enjoyed all the crazy people and things we meet throughout the story, you really never know what you are going to be reading about from page to page. I also enjoyed all the action. Like the Sandman Slim series this book is not for the faint of heart. It is also not quite as good as other cyberpunk novels out there. While I would recommend reading William Gibson or early Neal Stephenson books first if you want to check out the cyberpunk genre, I would say if you have read those and want more cyberpunk this book is a decent option. It’s crazily creative and definitely entertaining.

Quicksand House, by Carlton III Mellick

From master of bizarro fiction Carlton Mellick III, author of the international cult hits Satan Burger and Adolf in Wonderland, comes a dystopian nightmare of epic proportions.

"You must never leave the nursery. If you leave, you will certainly die."

Tick and Polly have never met their parents before. They live in the same house with them, they dream about them every night, they share the same flesh and blood, yet for some reason their parents have never found the time to visit them even once since they were born. Living in a dark corner of their parents' vast crumbling mansion, the children long for the day when they will finally be held in their mother's loving arms for the first time... But that day seems to never come. They worry their parents have long since forgotten about them.

When the machines that provide them with food and water stop functioning, the children are forced to venture out of the nursery to find their parents on their own. But the rest of the house is much larger and stranger than they ever could have imagined. The maze-like hallways are dark and seem to go on forever, deranged creatures lurk in every shadow, and the bodies of long-dead children litter the abandoned storerooms. Every minute out of the nursery is a constant battle for survival. And the deeper into the house they go, the more they must unravel the mysteries surrounding their past and the world they've grown up in, if they ever hope to meet the parents they've always longed to see.

Like a survival horror rendition of Flowers in the Attic, Carlton Mellick III's Quicksand House is his most gripping and sincere work to date.

From the Inside Flap
Praise for Quicksand House

"Thequintessentialbizarronovel, the one that should be handed to readers who are curious about that genre -- an equal measure of dystopian science-fiction, survival horror, comedy, and weirdness. And, like the best bizarro books, it also serves as a thoughtful examination and deconstruction -- this time of the nuclear family. Think Flowers in the Attic meets Escape From New York meets Alice in Wonderland meets Fallout 3." --Brian Keene, author of The Girl on the Glider

"Mellick's most emotional and moving novel to date. Packed with more wildly original concepts than you could find in the current top ten New York Times bestsellers put together. A heartfelt survival story that mixes pain, fear, and longing with childlike wonder, beauty, and affection. For those who have read Mellick before, the emotional depth of this story will be a wonderful surprise. For those who haven't, this is a great place to start." --Verbicide

"His best book yet, built solidly upon perfect classic story structure that simply happens to overflow with weird characters, settings, and events, as with all of Mellick's fiction. Quicksand House is apocalyptic and dystopian, yet thoughtfully nostalgic, positive, and even hopeful." --Midwest Book Review

From the Back Cover
Praise for Carlton Mellick III

"Easily the craziest, weirdest, strangest, funniest, most obscene writer in America." -- GOTHIC MAGAZINE

"Carlton is an acquired taste, but he hooks you like a drug." --HUNTER SHEA, author of Forest of Shadows

"The most original novelist working today? The most outrageous? The most unpredictable? These aren't easy superlatives to make; however, Carlton Mellick may well be all of those things, behind a canon of books that all irreverently depart from the form and concepts of traditional novels, and adventure the reader into a howling, dark fantasyland of the most bizarre, over-the-top, and mind-warping inventiveness." --EDWARD LEE, author of Header

"Carlton Mellick III is a genius with an insanely beautiful imagination." --JOE AUGUSTYN, writer of Night of the Demons

"Carlton Mellick III has the craziest book titles... and the kinkiest fans!" --CHRISTOPHER MOORE, author of The Stupidest Angel

"If you haven't read Mellick you're not nearly perverse enough for the twenty first century." --JACK KETCHUM, author of The Woman and The Girl Next Door

"Carlton Mellick III is one of bizarro fiction's most talented practitioners, a virtuoso of the surreal, science fictional tale." --CORY DOCTOROW, author of Little Brother

"Mellick's career is impressive because, despite the fact that he puts out a few books a year, he has managed to bring something new to the table every time... Every Mellick novel is packed with more wildly original concepts than you could find in the current top ten New York Times bestsellers put together." --VERBICIDE

"Mellick's guerrilla incursions combine total geekboy fandom and love with genuine, unbridled outsider madness. As such, it borders on genius, in the way only true outsider art can." --FANGORIA

"Bizarre, twisted, and emotionally raw--Carlton Mellick's fiction is the literary equivalent of putting your brain in a blender." --BRIAN KEENE, author of The Rising and Dead Sea

"I'm a huuuuge Bizarro fan. This new strain of cheerfully transgressive weird fiction is to me the most vibrant, exciting, genre-mangling scene in all of strange literature today. And no one holds dominion over this blossoming underground phenomenon like the godfather of Bizarro, Carlton Mellick III. With the most impressive sideburns in imaginative lit since Isaac Asimov, and a brain that squirts out more shamelessly playful originality in any given chapter than most artists will accomplish in their entire lives, he's the poster boy. The Elvis. As well he should be." --JOHN SKIPP, co-author of The Bridge

"It's not unusual to blow through a Mellick book in one sitting. They're fast-paced with an endless number of surprises, making it tough not to keep turning pages. When the end comes, I'm left with that done-too-soon feeling that I always love experiencing." --RAZORCAKE

"A wormhole of disturbing surrealism and absurd satire." --VICE MAGAZINE

"Carlton Mellick III exemplifies the intelligence and wit that lurks between its lurid covers. In a genre where crude titles are an art in themselves, Mellick is a true artist." --THE GUARDIAN

"His fiction blends bizarre scenarios mixed with horror, action, and even more bizarre actions to create fiction that toes the line between the absurd and the dark places of the mind... Shocking yet entertaining" --THE EXAMINER

"I imagine Mellick as a Willy Wonka-type character, someone with personal access to another world, a world of his own creation, but due to its mind-bending energy, he's lost control of it, and it continues to thrive even without him there to pull the strings. And I like the idea of that." --BOOKIE MONSTER

"The imp of the perverse." --3AM MAGAZINE

"Just as Pop had Andy Warhol and Dada Tristan Tzara, the Bizarro movement has its very own P. T. Barnum-type practitioner. He's the mutton-chopped author of such books as Electric Jesus Corpse and The Menstruating Mall, the illustrator, editor, and instructor of all things Bizarro, and his name is Carlton Mellick III." --DETAILS MAGAZINE

"Discussing Bizarro literature without mentioning Mellick is like discussing weird-ass muttonchopped authors without mentioning Mellick." --CRACKED.COM

A tale of desperation
By S.T. Cartledge
One thing I love about Mellick's writing is that, while he's pioneered his own brand of weird and he pumps out new books on a quarterly basis, he remains remarkably diverse from one book to the next. I've read close to half of Mellick's back catalogue at the moment, and I'm gradually filling in the gaps. I love the stylish narrative experimentation in some of his earlier works (eg. Satan Burger, Fishy Fleshed, The Egg Man), but I believe he has settled for a more standard narrative style in the past few years. It is a style that very much plays to his strengths as a storyteller of bizarre, outlandish science fiction tales. This is most evident in Tumor Fruit and Cuddly Holocaust.

With Quicksand House, however, Mellick has taken one of his bizarre dystopian landscapes and crafted something unimaginably beautiful out of it. It is a gem. It is magical. This story is heartfelt and lonely. Courageous and sad. Tragically desperate.

It's a story of two children who grew up in a bubble. Not a real bubble. A metaphoric one. They have a set idea about what the world is in which they live, and it sounds so childish it can't be true. You read the story and go along with the children, venturing out into a strange, dark world they think they understand. They think they can figure it out. They think that maybe somehow, somewhere, their image of reality and the reality they are experiencing will merge and make some sort of sense. Even if it isn't an exact replica of how things could be.

It's a twisted quest narrative that is incredibly desperate. I love these kids. They are so brave and wonderful. Mellick has taken his storytelling to captivating new places. He's come a long way since Satan Burger. This book is a real stunner.

I'm sinking in Quicksand House as we speak!
By Jeremy
For those out there who think Bizarro is just about silliness, the bar has been raised. This story will shatter your heart, hopes and dreams as you read about Polly and Tick, children who have never known their parents, who have never seen the world outside of the nursery in their country-sized mansion. One day, when the Creepers destroy their every day way of life in the nursery, they go in search of the mother and father they've never known. What they find is that their parents have probably never known them either. This is a very special story that deserves to be read. Forget everything you thought you knew about Bizarro. It's about to break through!

Sinking in Quicksand
By Vincenzo Bilof
A lot of readers who are actually familiar with the bizarro genre think it may be nothing more than obscenity-laden work that uses toilet-humor and satire as a vehicle for metaphor. I will be the first to tell you that CM3 has written a tale that should be on the bookshelves of major bookstores across the country, and in libraries; this is a book that comes from the heart, and it's something every reader can relate to.

Tick and Polly embark on a quest to find their parents in their own house. No simpler statement has bigger implications for this tale's moving portrayal of a journey that the vast majority of people take during their lives. Their quest is not unlike our own to discover who we are through our parents, or who are parents are and what they truly want from us. Not many people understand their parents...

The personal statement in Quicksand House is delivered by a master storyteller who seems to know exactly when the reader is about to figure out something important about the mysterious setting, right before Tick and Polly learn it on their own. CM3 rewards his readers and takes them through the shadowy corners of a home that is slowly dying from neglect. There is plenty of depth and symbolism, and CM3 doesn't overburden the weighty ideas with heavy prose; in fact, there's a part of me that thinks this could be a great Young Adult book, and that's not meant to be an insult. This is the kind of book that can be enjoyed by anybody who has an appreciation for creativity and excellent storytelling.

The book is a page-turner; the intrigue and character development established a fast pace that caused a sense of dread to settle in my stomach; I wanted Tick and Polly to find exactly what they were looking for because they're innocent victims of a world that wants nothing to do with love or humanity. This book is a tear-jerker and a work of art. Read it. Now

Introduction to Carrier Ethernet: A foundation for MEF-CECP training, by Jon Kieffer

This book is an entry-level introduction to Carrier Ethernet, intended for anyone new to Carrier Ethernet, including those with little or no background in computer networking and/or telecommunications. It has two aims: (1) to explain networking technology leading up to and motivating Carrier Ethernet and (2) to explain Carrier Ethernet conceptually within this framework. This book was conceived to be a prequel to Fujitsu's MEF-CECP Study Guide (any edition), but can be used alone (as an introduction to Carrier Ethernet) or in combination with other professional certification training materials. Carrier Ethernet emerges in the overlap between two highly evolved realms of commercial networking technology: (1) enterprise1 computer networking and (2) telecommunications networking. At one time these realms were very distinct, but for some years now they have been evolving toward convergence. Many professionals interested in Carrier Ethernet lack fundamental knowledge in one or both realms, as well as a clear framework for understanding their convergence and Carrier Ethernet's place in the evolution. Training resources for Carrier Ethernet professional certification tend to assume significant background knowledge and focus on mastering the details needed to pass an exam over core fundamentals and motivations. This book is designed to complement such material, focusing instead on explaining the big picture, the core background technologies, the context, the motivations, and the concepts that underpin Carrier Ethernet. The main goal is to impart a strong foundation for understanding Carrier Ethernet in a general sense. A secondary goal is to offer insights into the evolution of networking technology and the issues that surround and motivate Carrier Ethernet. Chapter 1 provides a synopsis of the book and a brief explanation of Carrier Ethernet. Chapter 2 explains Ethernet in local area networking, starting from first principles and simple contexts and gradually building up to include MAC bridging and VLAN bridging. Chapter 3 describes traditional Telecom technology and wide area networking solutions prior to Carrier Ethernet. Chapter 4 provides a high-level overview of Carrier Ethernet. The appendix includes supportive details related to various of topics covered in the book. This 2nd Edition of the book was published mainly to change the book's subtitle.

Best way to organize major concepts
By BV
I recommend reading this either before or after the more advanced text, depending on your learning process. Before, if you need an initial organizational framework to introduce the CE concepts. After, if you want to make a global sense of where the details fit in the big picture as well as what the details are meant to address.

Great book for learning concepts
By G. Palmer
Great book for learning concepts.

This book provides background for understanding Carrier Ethernet. It covers a lot of ground and is more technical than I expected, but it's easy to follow because of the author's accessible writing style and the many illustrations. Overall: great value.
