Through a closer look at the individual Neo-Hittite kingdoms and their rulers and a comparison with the contemporary Aramaean states and the other kingdoms of the age--notably the Neo-Assyrian empire --it concludes with a historical synthesis of the Neo-Hittites when the last kingdom was absorbed into the Assyrian provincial administration.

Trevor Bryce is an Honorary Research Consultant at the University of Queensland and Emeritus Professor of the University of New England. Any information on Hittite history is hard to find. Trevor Bryce does an excellent and thorough job of presenting a history about a kingdom that had dissolved into many parts. I have also read two other books from Bryce.

I purchased TIC TOC as I wanted to get more involved in watches (both learning more about them physically, and the market surrounding them). Knowing very little, TIC TOC actually started from the beginning and went through precious metals, movements, history, replicas, and other baseline information necessary to fully understand the watch market. Other extremely helpful information was learning of "deals made" in the past by writers of the TIC TOC. �This allows the reader to get a good idea of what to expect a transaction to be like, and helps him/her keep in mind that there is more to factor in than most think (maintenance, bands, etc) when dealing with buying / selling. - Chris C

Writing useless books for dummies

This is the real specialty the authors of this book have mastered...
I am astonished at how many positive reviews this horrible, stinky title has received ... how many friends do this guys have? In fact this has got to be one of the worst tech book I have ever read, a total waste of money and paper.
My advice is , avoid this book, and any other book form the same authors, like plague! You will learn NOTHING from them.
The authors go on and on babbling about how unsecure wireless networks are, and are nonetheless unable to clearly indicate you any technique to take advantage or to protect form this weakness. All you get (apart from the boring and repetitive author's ruminations) are a few screenshots of NetStumbler (hey man, I can see by myself what it looks like, teach me how to use it instead ..), one screenshot of Kismet running on a linux xterm and a list of some of its command options (come on do you think that a beginner would ever be able to figure out how to use a open source tool like Kismet all by himself?)
Ah we also get a little advertisement for a couple of non-free tools like AiroPeek ... like a beginner should spend money on that? And , wait, there is no tutorial or intro on those tools as well. Just the usual couple of screenshots to make the book look good if you flip through it at the bookstore.
Seriously, I know this is hard to believe, but this pathetic excuse for a book is just a series of boring trivialities
For example ... did you ever think about the fact that installing a non-authorized, non-encrypted access point in your office network might actually be a security risk? I am sure you didn't, but thanks to this beautiful book you know, as the author spends pages and pages rambling and babbling about this absurd topic!
Years ago the "For Dummies" series used to be the right choice if you needed a humorous, tutorial-like but solid intro to a 'foreign' technology, but now the title is not a joke anymore.
"Hacking Wireless Networks for Dummies".. true to its title!

Worth reading but don't expect to be an expert

Most of the Dummies series books are appetite wetters at best and that's where they end.

They touch on the advanced things but don't explain enough for you to really fully realize the potential of anything. It's sort of like going into a suntan studio with a 3/4 raincoat on. You might get something out of being there but not enough for it to really be useful.

This book is no exception.

While it does touch on things such as ARP poisoning and Net Stumbler as well as some other useful starting points, it leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to expanding enough to make things worthwhile. It's a good introduction book but if you're planning on doing some real penetrations or penetration testing there are better books suited for this.

I would call this one a pre-reference reference book. At best.

Think your wireless network is secure from unauthorized use or attack? It's probably not. I just finished reading Hacking Wireless Network For Dummies by Kevin Beaver and Peter T. Davis, and this is one of the most practical books I've ever read for testing a network against attack.

The target of this book is the security professional involved in testing networks to make them more secure. There's a heavy emphasis on "ethical hacking", or learning how to test a network's security without doing harm or using the information in a destructive fashion. A security consultant using this book would learn how to pre-plan a test, work with the company to make sure they were properly authorized, and then write up the results in a professional manner. That aspect of the book is impressive, and it helps to frame the information in the right light (not as a textbook on how to break into networks).

From a practical standpoint, this book excels. Each of the chapters covers the theory behind how or why a certain aspect of a wireless network would be vulnerable to an attack or exploit. Then the authors cover a number of open source and commercial software packages that are available to focus on that area. For instance, chapter 14 goes into why WEP encryption is flawed and how it can be broken with relatively little effort. It's followed by an explanation on how WPA addresses some of those issues. Finally you get coverage on available tools that are used to crack WEP and how you can use them to test your own network.

Highly practical and heavy on application... If you're a security professional with responsibility for your organization's wireless network, you need to read this book. And if you're a techno-geek with your own wireless network, you'll want to get this book to play around. I know I will be doing a little hacking at Chez Duffbert...

Great memory book for your child's keepsakes

This particular purchase was a gift for a friends son, but I still have my 12 year olds sons book from 4 years ago. It's full of stories to be completed by your child and so funny to look back on when they're older. The hardback is very durable, has held up through a crazy (now 12 years old, as the photo shows:) ) boys toting it around and a move. I'll be holding on to this forever.

I love how it's a diary, but not

If you have a kid between the ages of 7 and 12, who LOVES The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, you have to get this book! My 10yr old begged and pleaded, and begged more for this book. When it arrived, you would have thought I was the coolest and best mom ever!

I love how it's a diary, but not. The kids get to make their own dialogues with some helpers. Highly recommend this "Do-It-Yourself" book for all kids who love the series. I think my son was done in one weekend filling it out (in pencil).... a few weeks later, he went in and erased a few things, and re-wrote. This has given him the desire to write his own books. Love it!

This is such a great series for children. My niece was so happy to get them, she's 10 and she read all 10 in 5 days. She ate them up, any book that can make a kid who has video games and a computer on hand choose it instead is worthy of buying.

About the Author
Joseph R. Dominick received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois and his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1970. He taught for four years at Queens College of the City University of New York before coming to the College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia where, from 1980 to 1985, he served as head of the Radio-TV-Film Sequence. Dr. Dominick is the author of three books in addition to The Dynamics of Mass Communication and has published more than thirty articles in scholarly journals. From 1976 to 1980, Dr. Dominick served as editor of the Journal of Broadcasting. He has received research grants from the National Association of Broadcasters and from the American Broadcasting Company and has consulted for such organizations as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Chemical Society.

The second book by Brown (Ribbonwork Gardens) is a cornucopia of fancy stitches, which she has divided into four styles of embroidery: traditional; silk ribbon; raised and textured; and bead. Twenty or so stitches per style are carefully demonstrated in full-color photos of each step of stitching. Even experienced stitchers are likely to learn something new. For example, the Spiderweb Rose, or how to couch ribbon. Brown also provides a thorough overview of the ribbons, floss, threads, and tools likely to be needed, along with idiosyncratic advice taken from her many years of sewing. As a catalogue of possibility for stitching, this is a wonderful addition to a crafting library.

This book surpassed my expectations, which rarely happens. Kudos to C&T and the author for putting together an excellent, comprehensive book on this topic. I have been doing embroidery of all kinds for several years and was delighted to see new (to me) stitches and combinations. The projects are beautiful and inspiring.

Embroidered & Embellished is a wonderful visual guide to 85 stitches that use thread, floss, ribbon, beads and more. Christen Brown divides the instruction into four sections: traditional embroidery, silk ribbon embroidery, raised and textured embroidery, and bead embroidery. For each, she teaches you specific stitches with detailed, up-close photos, and then she includes two different projects that utilize the stitches. If you are new to embroidery, Christen offers a good discussion on the materials to use. I thought her Embroidering With Confidence chapter offered lots of good tips for the novice as well as a refresher for those who have not picked up an embroidery needle for a while.

Embroidered and Embellished

This book, like Christen's first book (Ribbonwork Gardens) has photographed step-by-step instructions that are invaluable to the student who needs to see the process worked out, with easy to follow text. The book includes a section on the materials and supplies that you will be using, including information on beads, ribbons, threads, and other embellishments, with clear photographs of these items. The chapters include four different types of embroidery, which is different from other books that may concentrate on just one type of embroidery. This is a must have for anyone who enjoys working with needle and thread!

This book makes me so happy

I have taken a couple of classes from Christen Brown on line and though her classes are very thorough, I always wanted more - and here it is - beautifully detailed photos of stitches, patterns and instructions for some fun and DOABLE projects and beautifully photographed samples of some finished projects. Often I find books to be either too basic or advanced but without clear enough instructions to replicate them. This book offers instruction for making your projects as simple or as complex as your little heart desires including the addition of beads, sequins and ribbons to your embroidery. This book is awesome! Thanks Christen for writing the book I always wanted.

Christen Brown's new book is a winner!

If you do embroidery of any kind you should pick up a copy of Christen Brown's new book, Embroidered and Embellished: 85 Stitches Using Thread, Floss, Ribbon, Beads and More. The book lives up to it's title by detailing four different types of embroidery and the stitches that are used for each. The first thing you notice is Christen's attention to detail. The book contains numerous close-up photos of stitches in progress and the finished product. Her written descriptions are very detailed and easy to understand. The format of the book makes it easy to use with a chapter for stitching techniques and terminology, another for fabrics and trims, another for threads and ribbons, and another for beads and embellishments. There is a section that deals with creating confidence in your ability as an embroiderer by becoming familiar with things like thread length and needle sizes among other things. Christen even shares how she got started embroidering. The projects follow these chapters, and the directions are clear and, once again, the photographs are clear and easy to follow. There are projects for traditional embroidery, ribbon embroidery, raised embroidery and bead embroidery. Experienced and beginner embroiderers alike will benefit from the information in this book. It will definitely become a much used reference for anyone interested in learning embroidery or looking to refine their techniques. This is definitely a book that I would recommend to anyone who loves working with needle and thread.
