About the Author
Joan Wink is a professor emerita at California State University, Stanislaus. She lives primarily on the family ranch in South Dakota, but still maintains an active academic life: teaching, consulting, and writing. �Her other books include A Vision of Vygotsky (2002), co-authored with Le Putney of UNLV, and Teaching Passionately: What’s Love Got To Do With It? (2004), co-authored with her daughter, Dawn Wink of Santa Fe Community College.

Theory to Meaningful Practice

In terms of scholarly research and analysis, Joan Wink's Critical Pedagogy: Notes from the REAL WORLD has been insightful and interesting. Why? Because Wink's account isn't pure scientific theory, it's a book that tells us something about ourselves. It tells us where we come from, what we've been through, and where we're going. More importantly, it tells us something about the people we are and the people we want to become. While I was reading this book, it struck me that the term `marginalize' is very real and evident in the world around us. To marginalize "is to place someone or something on the fringes, on the margins of power" Wink states. I am reminded of this on a daily basis as decisions are made impacting our lives, and children's lives. Joan Wink has taken many theoretical aspects of critical pedagogy and written about them in comprehensible language. As one reads through the vignettes, it will be sure to trigger ideas in every individual's experience. Wink's book demonstrates the reality that very complex intricate theoretical ideas which academic language often excludes understandable meaning as one trudges through definitions can indeed be fascinating. However, I do want to add a word of caution about this book. It's obvious that Wink idolizes the idea of education and giving equal access to all students, (and so do I), and is courageous enough to point out how hegemonic principles are manifested. Once you read it, you will be faced with examining your own prejudices and stereotypes. Beware, as it takes courage to name and change Not all folks are up to the challenge! I highly recommend this book. Wink keeps your attention from start to end, and I am looking forward to her next book. Great work!

"Say what you mean; mean what you say"

In chapter two of the book, Wink tells her readers that someone criticized/challenged Joan by telling her to “say what you mean, and mean what you say.” And so Wnk tells her readers that is the goal of this book. She wants to simplify, but not be too simplistic. She wants to clarify, but not trivialize. I want to say right from the outset that I actually really liked the book overall. I think the stories that she tells, her experience as a teacher seems very valuable and I found myself really, really liking the examples she gave about her classroom experiences like with “the Benson kids” and her early writing classes where she just totally ditched the workbooks after reading Hooked on Books and when she describes all the bilingual environments she loves working with – I loved all of that. But I will be mostly critiquing through this review because I do not feel she achieved her goal in trying to say what she means – the book was neither simple nor simplistic, it was complicated. There was plenty of triviality, not enough clarification.

Wink often makes a very important point that she doesn’t want to necessarily define “criticial pedagogy” explicitly. “Please, please, please don’t memorize these definitions. Please please please don’t fall into the jargon pit. Definitions have value only if the reader sits, reads, reflects, connects, and muses on them.” To which I completely agree! This is great, but please, please, please, Joan Wink, don’t make things harder for us than they need to be. Definitions are also great because they help people establish a basic sense of “ok, what are we talking about here?” In my opinion, there’s nothing wrong with jargon, especially if you’re writing a text to be used in classrooms. Assert clearly, and leave it up to the reader and the class to discuss your assertions. As an example, she starts describing ‘codificiation’: “the concept, captured on paper, in the dirt, on the chalkboard, on the wall. It is the thought, painted. It is the symbol, symbolized.” The symbol, symbolized? That just doesn’t help anybody, and this type of thing is very much Wink’s style, unfortunately. Or another example from the book: “Let me share with you some definitions [of critical pedagogy] that came from students who have finished their undergraduate work…:

A state of mind, a place of reference
A framework from which to build
A questioning frame of mind
It makes us double-check our action and the action of others
It makes me do the best I can

I’m sorry, but these are not definitions of critical pedagogy and only makes things more confusing when trying to help readers define critical pedagogy for themselves. To illustrate, let me give a comparison. I like a certain subject called “permaculture.” You may ask for a definition. If I replied, “It’s a state of mind, a place of reference, a framework from which to build, and it’s something that makes us double-check our action and the action of others. That’s a good idea of what permaculture is. Now you define it.” I expect you would have no idea what I was really talking about, and certainly have a difficult time coming up with a definition of your own after hearing that.

To make things more complicated, Wink seems to spend a lot more time praising the field of critical pedagogy (as described above) and its authors than actually assert definitions for fear of being “trivial” or “simplistic.” Yet twice she feels the need to tell her readers that while reading Giroux “the words on the pages were vibrating as I read.” I love permaculture. Joan Wink loves critical pedagogy. But no one’s going to learn about either subject if we just praise the terms and likewise praise the specialists in the field. Again, this isn’t to discredit Joan Wink’s work or even this book. From the stories and examples and her breadth of reading, I have no doubt that she’s a tremendous teacher. But I also feel like someone needs to just tell Ms. Wink “you know what you’re talking about. But it’d also be great for you to get over your phobia of jargon and write a book that sounds like you know what you’re talking about.”

A must read for every teacher AND parent!!!

The best book I've read this year! Dr. Wink has delivered a remarkable book. She takes the often abstract and academic-ese of critical pedagogy and theory and makes the ideas understandable and, even more importantly, applicable to real-life. This book is a timely treasure. I couldn't put it down. Teachers who want to know how to create classes of dynamic thought, learning, and growing, this book will provide concrete ideas and strategies. Parents interested in learning how to create the best possible learning situations for your child will love this book. I was impressed with Dr. Wink's research and her ability to make such tough ideas so readable through the use of vignettes and examples. In today's politcal climate surrounding education, this book is a powerful tool in understanding not only the historical context, but the underlying politics surrounding the rhetoric. Thanks, Dr. Wink!
